Case Studies in Statistical Thinking

Mathematics and Statistics

Short Description

Take vital steps towards mastery as you apply your statistical thinking skills to real-world data sets and extract actionable insights from them.

Long Description

After completing Statistical Thinking I and II, you have developed a strong foundation in statistical thinking and hacker stats skills. Now, it is time to put your knowledge into practice. In this course, you will have the opportunity to apply your statistical thinking skills, exploratory data analysis, parameter estimation, and hypothesis testing to two real-world data sets. The first data set you will explore is from the 2013 and 2015 FINA World Aquatics Championships. Through this analysis, you will be able to quantify the relative speeds and variability among swimmers. Additionally, you will conduct a statistical analysis to investigate the current controversy surrounding the 2013 Worlds, where swimmers claimed that a slight current in the pool was affecting their results. The second data set focuses on the frequency and magnitudes of earthquakes worldwide. You will study this data to gain insights into the patterns and characteristics of earthquakes. Furthermore, you will analyze the changes in seismicity in the state of Oklahoma after the widespread practice of high-pressure waste water injection at oil extraction sites in the past decade. Working with these data sets will allow you to solidify your existing knowledge and expand your abilities in using statistics and Python to derive meaningful insights from data. By taking these vital steps towards mastery, you will enhance your skills and become proficient in making sense of complex data sets.
