The purpose of the qualification is to enable aspiring teachers who wish to specialize in Foundation Phase teaching to gain subject content knowledge, methodology, and theory to teach in this phase. Upon completion, Foundation Phase Teachers will be capable of teaching all four subjects (Home Language, First Additional Language, Mathematics, and Life Skills in Grades 1 to 3). They will draw from a broad range of general knowledge to support the implementation of the national school curriculum. The modules in this qualification ensure that teachers obtain sound subject knowledge in Life Skills, Languages, and Mathematics; understand teaching and learning; effectively communicate and mediate learning; design learning programs using resources; manage diversity in classrooms; assess learners reliably; display positive work ethic and values, and reflect critically and constructively on their practice. Additionally, teachers will have specialized knowledge of early childhood learning to teach reading, writing, numeracy, and develop key concepts and skills for future learning phases. This qualification also allows teachers to specialize in teaching a Home Language and English First Additional Language.
The Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching aims to provide a relevant and contemporary qualification in South Africa to equip teachers from diverse backgrounds to adapt to teaching in various contexts. It helps cultivate prospective teachers with the basic competencies of a beginner teacher as per the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications. This qualification addresses critical challenges in South African education and helps teachers develop competencies in dealing with diversity and transformation. The BEd (FP Teaching) is an initial teaching qualification to enable aspiring teachers to be registered as fully qualified professional educators, specifically in the Foundation Phase. It aims to develop qualified classroom teachers with focused knowledge and skills in teaching the Foundation Phase, including Grade R. The qualification fosters the development of professional competence with sound knowledge, understanding of the specialization area, and educational theory to develop practical competence.
Demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding of how children learn: Candidates should show a deep understanding of how children learn, with a focus on numeracy, literacy, and life skills.
Promote active learning: Utilize various strategies such as questioning techniques, activity-based teaching, and group work to encourage active learning among students.
Plan learning programmes: Use the South African Curriculum (currently CAPS) effectively to plan learning programmes in the Foundation Phase. Assess learner progress using a variety of assessment strategies for continuous assessment.
Implement the South African National Curriculum: Implement the South African National Curriculum (currently CAPS) using an integrated, resource-based approach.
Formative Assessment: Different types of formative assessment will be applied throughout the Bachelor of Education Degree qualification. This includes theoretical assignments, practical tasks (individual or group-based), and tests. All formative/continuous assessment tasks will be submitted to and assessed by the lecturer.
School-based Work Integrated Learning: Assessment will include structured observations during School-based Work Integrated Learning.
Summative Assessment: Examinations will be conducted to assess both theoretical and practical knowledge components at the end of the course.
By integrating these assessment criteria and methods, competence in the Exit Level Outcomes for the B Ed in Foundation Phase Teaching can be determined effectively.
