Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Title: Bachelor of Business Administration

Purpose:

Outcomes

  1. Solve business cases, work in teams, meet deadlines, and develop skills in decision-making techniques which can be used to solve management problems.
  2. Demonstrate competence in interpreting and using numerical and elementary statistical knowledge.
  3. Apply specialised knowledge as required for the particular areas of expertise to the overall business environment as it pertains to management, accounting and marketing.
  4. Apply Commercial Law within a South African context.
  5. Formulate, implement and evaluate business strategies based on discipline-specific concepts, principles and business analysis.
  6. Apply Tax knowledge appropriately to the practice of taxation and tax administration (tax returns with the South African Revenue Service).

  • Explain the role of business in society and consider the needs and resources of the community.
  • Identify and explain the internal and external business environment and the interaction between an organization and its environment.
  • Define and explain the entrepreneurial process, characteristics of an entrepreneur, difference between an entrepreneurial venture and a small business, and phases of growth in a business.
  • Identify and explain the origin of management theory and modern business management approaches.
  • Analyze the skills, roles, and characteristics of managers as important role players in establishing effective and efficient business practice.
  • Identify and explain all relevant aspects, processes, characteristics, theories, models, and techniques relevant to the four primary management functions (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling).

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements of sole traders, partnerships, and close corporations.
  • Understand the use of scarce resources and production and distribution choices available.
  • Describe and analyze numerical data, understand probability distribution concepts, and hypothesis testing.
  • Understand economic concepts such as inflation, unemployment, economic growth, imports, exports, balance of payment, and the role of government in the economy.
  • Understand marketing concepts such as segmentation, targeting, and positioning.
  • Understand how business organizations are regulated by commercial laws.

  • Apply principles and practices learnt in the classroom setting to their work setting.
  • Develop techniques and measures to monitor and control forecasts.
  • Understand management process strategy, capacity planning, layout strategies, location strategies, inventory management, and scheduling.
  • Gain an understanding of challenges stemming from the movement of goods, human resources, technology, finance, and ownership across national boundaries.
  • Appreciate multicultural and socio-economic aspects of the environments in which international firms operate.
  • Explain the role and functions of leadership in formulating policies in both public and private sectors.
  • Develop a business strategy for competitive advantage.
  • Recognize ethical issues and their influence on social responsibility and management decision making.
  • Understand types of financial markets and major participants in those markets.

  • Demonstrate analytical thinking through solving cases related to behavior of people in the workplace.
  • Formulate human resources management policies with emphasis on recruitment, selection, training, and development.
  • Understand employer/employee relations and labor laws.
  • Diagnose problems organizations face and present some solutions.

  • Understand the need for both a management accounting and a financial accounting system.
  • Demonstrate how cost management systems support quality initiatives.
  • Prepare a budget and understand its effect on strategic and tactical planning.
  • Understand the relationship between financial institutions and markets and their role in the money and capital markets.
  • Differentiate between debt and equity capital.
  • Understand the integrated marketing communication mix.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Understand matters relating to taxation of businesses and individuals.
  • Assist in the preparation of consolidated financial statements.
  • Calculate taxation liability accurately for individuals and businesses.
  • Understand the basic principles of taxation and financial accounting.

Integrated Assessment:

  • The final assessment should measure the learner's ability to operate efficiently within the business and communication professional environments.
  • Assess the integration of roles, knowledge, and skills delivered through the degree program.
  • Assess practical functions, foundational competence, and reflexive competence.
  • The assessment should include case studies, problem-solving assignments, portfolios, projects, written and oral examinations, and internship.
  • The assessment criteria should include generating options for action, identifying appropriate courses of action, performing actions, evaluating performance, reflecting on learning and performance, and developing future action plans.
