Bachelor of Education Honours in Mathematics Education

Education, Training and Development - Schooling

Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is to empower teachers with the skills and methodologies to conduct classroom-based research in Mathematics education. It aims to enable teachers to critically interrogate, reflect on, and improve their Mathematics classroom practices. The qualification will provide a research approach to Mathematics teaching and learning based on classroom practices, specifically focusing on improving mathematics classroom practices using empirical data and research-based evidence. Ultimately, this will lead to an improvement in the quality of Mathematics teaching and learning in the country, making a valuable contribution to the global literature in the discipline of Mathematics Education.

Rationale:

Many leading industrialized nations, including those of the Pacific Rim, acknowledge the significant impact of Mathematics education on the economy. The increasing requirement for mathematical skills in various job sectors has become evident over the past two decades and is expected to continue at an accelerated pace. Therefore, the employment prospects of current learners are closely tied to their level of mathematical knowledge, ranging from basic numeracy to high-level Mathematics. Without significant improvements in Mathematics education, there is a risk to future economic prosperity.

This qualification serves as an opportunity to cultivate proficient Mathematics Education teachers, thus enhancing the mathematical competencies of learners and addressing the growing demand for mathematical skills in the workforce.

Outcomes

  1. Display and apply knowledge of Mathematics Education in practice.
  2. Conduct independent research in Mathematics education and report findings in academically appropriate ways.
  3. Develop essential knowledge, skills and attitude for assessing learner achievement.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Concepts, theories, and approaches in Mathematics Education are analysed and synthesised to inform and deepen knowledge of teaching and learning processes (materials, curriculum, interactions, and assessment).
  • Knowledge and theory are applied in designing and implementing professional practices (e.g. teaching, learning, and assessment).

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Analyse, evaluate, and apply knowledge of research in Mathematics Education to conduct research that transforms classroom practice.
  • Analyse and evaluate relevant and current literature from various sources on a selected topic in Mathematics education.
  • Understand different research paradigms and methodologies to select appropriate tools and research designs for classroom-based research.
  • Understand and analyse knowledge of Mathematics Education and related research processes impacting mathematics classroom practices.
  • Design a research proposal on classroom practice.
  • Write a research report in Mathematics Education.
  • Communicate findings through an oral presentation and written report.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Formulate clear and concise learning goals for learners.
  • Develop assessment instruments to measure the level of competence of learners.
  • Evaluate learners' performance using the assessment instrument.
  • Develop new approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment of the subject to improve knowledge acquisition.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Learning and assessment are integrated to assess the Exit Level Outcomes within the qualification.
  • Formative assessments are in place to ensure continuous learning and feedback for candidates.
  • Summative assessments are used to make judgments about learning at the Exit Level Outcomes, assessing the candidate's ability to integrate the larger body of knowledge, competencies, and attitudes represented by the Exit-Level Outcomes.
