Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering

Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology - Engineering and Related Design

Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

This qualification is designed to provide learners with the necessary knowledge, understanding, abilities, and skills to become competent practicing Professional Engineering Technicians. The focus is on developing the capacity to apply proven techniques, procedures, practices, and codes to solve complex engineering problems, manage and supervise engineering operations, and work independently within specific areas. Additionally, learners will gain an understanding of engineering sciences, financial considerations, legal aspects, socio-economic factors, as well as health, safety, and environmental best practices. The qualification aims to prepare individuals for entry into niche roles within the labor market and enable them to pursue further specialization in the field.

Rationale:

The continuous advancement of technology in engineering requires individuals to possess higher levels of conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. The ability to adapt to new technologies relies heavily on fundamental knowledge and its practical application to address modern engineering challenges and promote sustainable development. The demand for engineering qualifications in South Africa has been highlighted by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), which emphasizes the need to increase the engineering workforce to compete on an international level. The Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering [B. Eng. Tech (Mechanical Engineering)] is designed to be vocational, industry-oriented, with a focus on knowledge acquisition, practical application, and technology transfer. This qualification aims to prepare students for careers in engineering, contribute to economic growth and national development, and meet the educational requirements for registration as a Candidate and/or a Professional Engineering Technician with ECSA. It also serves as a pathway to higher qualifications such as an Advanced Diploma or Bachelor's Degree.

Outcomes

  1. Apply engineering principles to systematically diagnose and solve broadly-defined, complex engineering problems.
  2. Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences to defined and applied engineering procedures, processes, systems, and methodologies.
  3. Use appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering tools including information technology, prediction and modelling, with an understanding of their limitations, restrictions, premises, assumptions and constraints.
  4. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with engineering audiences and affected parties.
  5. Comprehend and apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics, responsibilities and norms of mechanical engineering practice.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the impact of mechanical engineering activity on the society, economy, industrial and physical environment.
