Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to enable teachers to develop specialised knowledge and skills and apply them to the teaching and learning of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) in the classroom. The qualification aims to deepen teachers' subject matter knowledge, general principles, and methodology in EMS teaching. Teachers will also develop disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational learning and reflexive competencies in teaching and learning in the Senior Phase of schooling.

Aims:

  1. Fostering self-reflexivity and self-understanding.
  2. Development of competences to organise learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts.

Rationale

Extensive consultation with education departments on a national level and national needs analysis have highlighted the shortage of adequately qualified teachers for the Senior Phase Economic and Management Sciences (EMS). The number of teachers attending numerous courses to increase their knowledge base of EMS also indicates a lack of professional capacity among many teachers currently employed to teach Senior Phase EMS. The Advanced Certificate Senior Phase Economic and Management Sciences Teaching [AdvCert (SP EMS Teaching)] has been developed to upgrade the knowledge and skills of teachers currently employed in the Senior Phase.

This qualification is aimed at:

  • Teachers who hold a prior qualification in Economic and Management Sciences teaching to strengthen their subject specialization.
  • Retraining teachers for the teaching of Economic and Management Sciences in the Senior Phase.
  • Enabling existing Economic and Management Sciences teachers to develop disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational learning reflexive competencies in teaching and learning related to Economic and Management Sciences.
  • Providing teachers of other subjects with the necessary knowledge and skills to teach Economic and Management Sciences.

The Advanced Certificate in Senior Phase Economic and Management Sciences Teaching is designed to address the subject-specific needs of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) teachers in the Senior Phase. In addition to the national prescribed requirements, this qualification includes additional learning credits for deepening teachers' subject content knowledge.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate specialised knowledge of the principles and teaching methodologies relevant to Senior Phase Economic and Management Sciences teaching.
  2. Act on and contribute to change in the broader education context promoting inclusivity and eliminating barriers to learning.
  3. Apply Information and Communication Technology skills to Senior Phase Economic and Management Sciences teaching.
  4. Act with integrity by maintaining the highest level of professional work ethics.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Conceptualisation of theory, teaching, learning, and assessment of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) in the Senior Phase
  • Selection and application of relevant teaching strategies such as large class discussions, co-operative learning, learner-research, and problem-solving
  • Interpretation and application of curricula at a classroom level and associated pedagogy for EMS teaching
  • Effective conveyance of integrated knowledge of concepts and principles in Accounting, Business Studies, and Entrepreneurship to learners

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Planning of teaching and learning according to learners' needs, school, community, and available resources
  • Utilization of appropriate teaching methods for inclusivity considering differentiated teaching and learning styles
  • Identification and addressing of barriers to learning, including disabilities, in the classroom
  • Effective classroom management to enhance teaching and learning for all learners

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Utilisation of hardware and software computer systems for planning and delivering lessons
  • Consideration of multiple perspectives in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field when designing learning activities

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Understanding and application of the South African Council for Educators (SACE) Code of Conduct for Teachers
  • Maintenance of confidentiality regarding learners
  • Evaluation of ethical dimensions in professional teaching and learning practice

Integrated Assessment:

  • Central role of assessment in the teaching and learning process, providing formative and summative opportunities
  • Requirement for holistic, integrated assessment aligning with the qualification's purpose
  • Specific assessment strategies for each module in compliance with institutional rules and policies
  • Assessment through assignments, tests, examinations, or equivalent tasks depending on module nature and lecturer involvement
  • Continuous assessment activities including tests, assignments, projects, presentations, critiques, group assignments, portfolios, and practical work
  • Assessment for School Experience involves evaluation of teaching practice and portfolio with appointed supervisors and external examiner involvement
  • Teachers' assessment based on supervisors' reports, school confidential reports, student report, and examiner's reports, with marks awarded based on teaching practice and portfolio performance.
