Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
Add the cold butter pieces to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate bowl, mix together the milk and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the flour and butter mixture, stirring until just combined.
Gently fold in the fresh berries, being careful not to overmix the dough.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick.
Use a biscuit cutter to cut out rounds of dough and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Brush the tops of the scones with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake the scones for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
Allow the scones to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious berry scones!
