Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

This qualification enables learners to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of concepts, principles, and procedures relevant to FET English First Additional Language teaching.
  • Create a language classroom environment that is conducive to teaching and learning, through creative planning and organization of the classroom.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and insight into teaching language structure and convention as well as literature in the English FAL classroom in the FET Phase.

Rationale

The Advanced Certificate is primarily vocationally oriented. The knowledge gained from the qualification emphasizes general principles and their application. The qualification provides learners with a sound knowledge base for teaching a particular subject and/or phase, as well as the ability to apply their knowledge and skills to classroom teaching, while equipping them to undertake more specialized and intensive learning.

Thus, the Advanced Certificate in FET English First Additional Language Teaching [AdvCert (FET English FAL Teaching)] addresses the requirement of creating both a teaching and learning pathway for teachers in order to advance their careers. The AdvCert (FET English FAL Teaching) does not only focus on FET education in general but has a specific aim to improve teachers' knowledge and competencies in a new subject and to strengthen their subject specialization.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of theories of learning relevant to English FAL teaching.
  • Explain and apply inclusivity and barriers to learning in lesson preparation.
  • Adapt and use different teaching strategies and assessment approaches.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Reflect collaboratively on lessons with other teachers to accommodate all levels of learning.
  • Create a creative space to exercise professional judgement.
  • Identify areas for further learning and facilitate learning within diverse education contexts.
  • Plan English Language teaching in an integrated manner based on critical reflection.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Demonstrate sound subject knowledge during teaching.
  • Interpret and design learning programmes and materials.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assess learners' competence through assignments, tests, examinations, and examination equivalent tasks.
  • Include continuous assessment activities such as tests, assignments, projects, lesson presentations, group assignments, portfolios, and practical work.
  • Integrate Work Integrated Learning (WIL) into teaching modules to learn from practice and reflect critically on teaching.
  • Conduct practical assessment activities, assignments, and maintain a reflective journal in all modules to develop a sense of agency as teachers.
