Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The Bachelor of Commerce (B Com) aims to develop skilled graduates who can critically engage with the world and apply disciplinary content to problem-solving. The intention is for students to advance disciplinary knowledge in chosen specializations through postgraduate study and enhance their career prospects in various professional options. With a strong focus on core functional areas of business management, majors are offered in business management and other disciplines.

The key objectives of this qualification are:

  1. To familiarize learners with the content and basic theories of various disciplines in commerce, including statistics.
  2. To deepen understanding of selected disciplines at an advanced level and equip students with problem-solving skills.
  3. To provide learners with scholarly and intellectual competencies, including critical thinking and research skills.
  4. To impart graduate-level knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed in commerce and industry for lifelong learning and contribution to society.
  5. To develop functional managers in core areas of management at the middle management level.

Rationale:

The Bachelor of Commerce (B Com) is a three-year program designed to equip learners with the skills to address current challenges in South Africa and globally across various professions in business management and related fields. The program aims to be academically versatile, allowing for articulation into postgraduate qualifications for further specialization. The curriculum is tailored to the institution's expertise and relevant areas for the region, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the workforce and further academic pursuits.

  • Ability to critically question the basic assumptions of important theories, scholarly positions, and methodologies in business disciplines.
  • Competence in using basic modes of inquiry from at least three core disciplines to solve less complex problems.
