Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) Honours in Childhood Education is designed to:

  • Develop expertise and research capacity in the field of Childhood Education.
  • Emphasize children's learning and development, focusing on the birth to 12 years age-group.
  • Utilize current theories of child development for assessment purposes.
  • Educate subject matter experts in childhood education.
  • Enable learners to engage with critical issues in Mathematics, Science, Language, Literacy, Social Sciences and Culture, and Human Movement and Physical Education.
  • Equip learners with knowledge to assess and evaluate childhood learning and development.
  • Produce research projects relevant to current theories in Childhood Education.
  • Design and conduct evaluations of learning and development in different content domains.

Rationale:

  • Childhood education research is underdeveloped in South Africa.
  • Initiatives by the DHET and the EU have highlighted the need to strengthen the sector through research.
  • The establishment of SARAECE and the South African Journal of Childhood Education demonstrate a growing interest in the field.

Outcomes

  • Conducted in an integrated manner with both summative and formative assessment tasks.
