Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The purpose of the Bachelor of Education Honours in Education Leadership and Management is to develop applied research capacity by exposing learners to different research methodologies and leadership theories in the field of management. This includes areas such as human and financial resources, computer technology, and education policy. The qualification aims to enable managers and leaders to develop professional skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to become highly competent school and district managers and leaders. Upon completion of this qualification, learners will achieve the following outcomes:

  1. Gain a solid foundation in current theories of education leadership and management for conducting research.
  2. Understand key concepts and theories relevant to organizational behavior in education.
  3. Acquire integrated knowledge of research methodologies and design in education leadership and management.
  4. Understand the relationship between societal developments and education policies, analyzing and interpreting policy developments critically.
  5. Recognize the importance of effective financial management in schools and critically analyze various financial management functions.
  6. Engage in research and writing in a specialized area under supervision.

  • Develop awareness of personal leadership strengths and areas for further development.
  • Demonstrate understanding of advantages and disadvantages of various leadership theories.
  • Determine the most relevant approach in specific leadership situations.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Demonstrate familiarity with theories and concepts in organisation behaviour.
  • Show competence in organisation change and transformation facilitation.
  • Develop an understanding of learning organisation and change leadership.
  • Develop competence in organisation processes like communication, problem solving, decision-making, and conflict.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Develop an understanding of different research paradigms.
  • Gain knowledge in selecting research design.
  • Insight into data collection methods and data analysis.
  • Develop skills in drawing up a research proposal and writing up a research report.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Describe trends in the labour force composition and their impact on HR management.
  • Strategically plan for human resources to meet organisational goals.
  • Compare and contrast different computer technologies.
  • Utilise database and database management systems effectively.
  • Provide theoretical framework for finance problems and apply concepts in practice.
  • Develop skills in financial management effectively and with integrity.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Demonstrate competence in applying basic research skills and techniques.
  • Identify educational leadership and management issues.
  • Conduct basic research activities.
  • Analyse educational leadership and management situations against theoretical background.
  • Present information in a structured research proposal and report.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Final mark compiled from at least four assessment opportunities in a 28-week module.
  • Assessment opportunities may include assignments, portfolios, exams, etc.
  • One substantial assessment task towards the end of the module.
  • Task should be externally moderated and represent at least 50% but not more than 60% of the final mark.
  • Detailed feedback provided to learners within fifteen working days.
