The qualification aims to:

  • Strengthen the subject specialisation of practising teachers with prior qualifications in Mathematics Teaching at a lower level.
  • Retrain teachers for the teaching of Mathematics Literacy in the FET Phase.
  • Enable teachers to develop disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational learning reflexive competences in teaching Mathematics Literacy.
  • Deepen subject matter knowledge, general principles, and methodology in Mathematics Literacy teaching.
  • Develop competences in teaching and learning in the FET phase.
  • Fostering self-reflexivity and self-understanding among teachers.
  • Develop competences to organize learning among diverse learners in various contexts.

The qualification also aims to:

  • Provide a strong professional focus.
  • Address the needs of teachers who want to specialize in Mathematics Literacy or upgrade their qualifications.
  • Cater to teachers who studied Mathematics Literacy but want to strengthen their field of study.

  • Demonstrate inclusivity and barriers to learning, as well as principles and practices of effective teaching and learning.
  • Apply teaching strategies and assessment approaches.
  • Demonstrate the application of ICT skills to FET Mathematics Literacy Teaching.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Transform own subject competence into conceptual learning experiences.
  • Reflect on professional practice based on an integrated knowledge base.
  • Demonstrate acting with integrity by maintaining the highest level of professional work ethics.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Demonstrate applied competence through a variety of formative assessment methods.
  • Summative assessment will be through examinations.
  • Various assessment activities will be constructively aligned to programme and module outcomes.
  • Assessment will be in line with the University's Assessment Policy.
  • Integrated assessment gives an opportunity for students to demonstrate their achievement holistically across exit-level outcomes.
  • Assessment strategies in each module will comply with institutional rules and policies.
  • Continuous assessment activities will include tests, assignments, projects, presentations, group assignments, portfolios, and practical work.
  • Assessment of experiential learning through Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) will be integrated in teaching modules, allowing students to learn from practice and reflect critically on their own practice.
