Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

Upon qualifying, the learner will be able to:

  1. Apply the core principles of the foreign languages, French, German, Italian, and Spanish to roles being prepared for Advanced Opera Workshop and any other large-scale works.

  2. Apply music creatively and effectively in the context of performance at a level of sophistication suitable for national solo or ensemble performance.

Rationale:

The Advanced Diploma in Opera offers a learning pathway for learners who have completed a Diploma in Music at NQF Level 6 to progress into the Postgraduate Diploma in Music (NQF Level 8). The rationale behind this qualification is to equip South Africa with learners who possess expertise in diverse musical traditions, ensuring the high quality and continuity of the local leadership base in innovative musical expertise in Opera.

This qualification aims to help learners develop advanced skills and applied competence in opera, providing them with opportunities for personal intellectual growth and enabling them to make valuable contributions to society through arts and culture. Furthermore, the qualification aims to open up employment opportunities for learners in performance, preparing them for careers in solo or ensemble performance.

  • Basic Textual Understanding: Ability to comprehend text and convey understanding physically.
  • Stanislavskian Work: Utilization of Stanislavski's methods, with a mix of home and European languages.
  • Singing Proficiency: Demonstration of technical singing skills.
  • Musical Style and Dramatic Interpretation: Display of musical style and dramatic interpretation in performances.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Appreciation of Performance and Creative Expression: Understanding and application in various musical genres.
  • Communication of Creative and Performing Issues: Clear communication of interpretation to others.
  • Effective Individual/Team Player: Demonstrated ability to work as an individual specialist or in music ensembles.
  • Musical Interpretation Theories: Application of theories in performing opera.
  • Body Movement and Dance Techniques: Demonstration of relaxation, body movement, classical, national, and contemporary dance techniques.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Tests and Quizzes: Combination of written assessments and practical examinations.
  • Operatic Performances: Inclusion of operatic performances in assessments.
  • Oral Examinations: Evaluation through oral examinations.
  • Vocal Studies Performance: Assessment by a panel appointed by the Senate.
  • Performance Time: Totaling 25-30 minutes, with a minimum of 8 minutes dedicated to singing.
