Purpose:
The qualification aims to:
- Strengthen the subject specialisation of practising teachers with a prior qualification in Life Sciences Teaching at a lower level or retrain teachers for teaching Life Sciences in the FET Phase.
- Enable teachers to develop disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational learning reflexive competences in teaching Life Sciences.
- Deepen subject matter knowledge, general principles, and methodology in Life Sciences teaching.
- Foster self-reflexivity, self-understanding, and development of competences to organise learning among diverse learners.
- Address the needs of teachers who want to specialise, upgrade, or strengthen their field of study in Life Sciences teaching.
Rationale:
- The institution has a history of providing quality teacher education and training, addressing the upgrading needs of teachers.
- The qualification aligns with national strategic priorities to advance teacher qualifications.
- Extensive consultation and needs analysis highlighted the shortage of qualified FET Life Sciences teachers.
