Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose

This qualification aims to provide learners with knowledge of Logistics and Supply Chain Management and equip them with the necessary skills to address related challenges. Upon completion, a qualified learner will be able to:

  • Integrate knowledge and understanding of Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
  • Make sound theoretical judgments based on evidence and think epistemologically with respect to Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
  • Identify, analyze, and deliver workable and evidence-based solutions to complex real-world problems and issues in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, using theory-driven arguments.
  • Understand and apply a range of research methods, techniques, and technologies to select appropriately for a particular research problem in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
  • Ensure efficient and effective information retrieval and processing skills, critically analyze, synthesize, and independently evaluate quantitative and/or qualitative data, current research, and literature related to Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
  • Present and communicate academic and professional work related to Logistics and Supply Chain Management effectively to various audiences using appropriate genres.

Rationale

The Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Logistics is designed to meet the demand for skilled professionals in the area of Logistics and Supply Chain Management in South Africa and the Southern African region. The South African government has identified Logistics as a critical and scarce skill. This qualification aims to equip learners with comprehensive knowledge, analytical and interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills, and problem-solving skills.

Upon completion, learners will become self-driven and integrated thinkers capable of evaluating information critically and independently conducting research to construct logical, well-founded arguments in the field of Logistics. This will enable them to make strategic logistics decisions within a supply chain context and develop appropriate logistics and supply chain strategies to enhance competitive advantages in business contexts.

Furthermore, the qualification will enable learners to create and maintain multiple supply chains with flexibility and responsiveness to respond to opportunities and threats aligning firms with the best suppliers, partners, and customers.

  • Apply a strategic profit model to determine the financial impact of inventory on a firm.
  • Formulate transport strategies pertaining to various transport issues from a logistics viewpoint.
  • Formulate proposals on logistics network design.
  • Formulate strategies on improving warehouse productivity.
  • Apply logistics costing for decision-making purposes.
  • Discuss the role of information systems and information sharing in relation to supply chain synchronisation and integration.
  • Compare a Quick Response (QR) Logistics System with an inventory-based system and discuss the requirements for and benefits of QR.
  • Formulate proposals on assimilating sustainability into Logistics and Supply Chain alignment.
  • Formulate proposals for implementing a sustainable Logistics strategy.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Analyse and interpret financial statements in terms of return on investment, profit margin, and asset turnover.
  • Formulate proposals on developing a business model in a supply chain context.
  • Outline, analyse, and interpret the principles, objectives, and strategies for freight transport in South Africa.
  • Argue the suitability of various intermodal vehicles.
  • Analyse knowledge gained from case study research related to Logistics and Supply Chain Management issues.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Identify and formulate a research problem, question, purpose, and objectives.
  • Substantiate an appropriate research design.
  • Argue the research methodology to be used.
  • Prepare an approved proposal for a research project.
  • Successfully conduct the proposed project under supervision.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Obtain and select appropriate literature.
  • Generate primary data.
  • Perform an appropriate literature review.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Capture and analyse data from research instruments.
  • Interpret and present data logically.
  • Identify and select computer software for data analysis.
  • Synthesise information generated through literature review and data analysis.
  • Formulate meaningful conclusions.
  • Present and motivate appropriate recommendations to target audiences.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved through integrated assessment.
  • Use a variety of methods in assessment that are appropriate to the context.
  • Implement formative and summative assessment tools and methods to confirm mastering of outcomes and workplace competencies.
  • Conduct summative assessment in each module through a three-hour written examination.
  • Use the project's mini-dissertation to determine critical application of theory and ability to find and integrate new information with existing knowledge.
