Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with integrated and detailed knowledge and skills of a professional and vocational nature in Office Management and Technology. A qualified learner will be able to:

  1. Identify, analyse, evaluate, critically reflect on and address complex problems, applying evidence-based solutions and theory-driven arguments.

  2. Demonstrate the ability to access, process and manage information, develop appropriate processes for information gathering for a given context or use, independently validate the sources of information, and evaluate and manage the information.

  3. Develop and communicate own ideas and opinions in well-formed arguments using appropriate academic, professional or occupational discourse.

  4. Take decisions and act ethically and professionally, justifying the decisions and actions drawing on appropriate ethical values and approaches within a support environment.

  5. Apply basic research principles, methodologies, and techniques.

  6. Apply knowledge of self and team to develop a plan to enhance team performance.

  7. Understand primary labour legislation that impacts a business unit.

Qualification Rationale:

The Advanced Diploma in Office Management and Technology is designed to provide learners with integrated and detailed knowledge in the field of office management and technology. The aim of this qualification is to equip learners with skills in administrative management, managing Information and Communication Technologies, strategic support management, and financial management. Learners will be prepared to manage work teams and office projects.

This qualification aims to develop the depth of knowledge of learners in this area of specialization through hands-on application to develop practical skills enabling them to apply these skills in the workplace. Learners will also be able to apply and evaluate key terms, concepts, principles, and theories in this field and related disciplines.

A research methodology integrated into this qualification aims to develop competencies of learners to identify, analyze, and resolve complex theoretical and industry-related problems through the selection and application of appropriate research methods and techniques.

This qualification will address national skills shortages, and qualified learners will be prepared for positions such as:

  • Administrative Managers in e-interfaced environments
  • Managers in a variety of information management positions
  • Administrative Personnel and Trainee Business Managers in various business fields.

  • Explain the steps involved in planning and developing a records retention program to support sound management information systems.
  • Explain concepts and techniques for protecting vital records with examples.
  • Enumerate and explain the difference between direct and indirect file access systems.
  • Compare different classification systems against requirements to understand different filing systems.
  • Describe and evaluate records management software for adequacy against standard requirements.

  • Explain the concept of a code of conduct in a business environment.
  • Demonstrate the development of a moral conscience in relation to professional conduct and personal integrity.
  • Explain the process to be followed when the code of ethics is breached using different examples.
  • Distinguish and explain behavior that demonstrates integrity and lack of integrity in terms of accepted ethical principles.
  • Identify and describe decision-making contexts by referring to external and internal motivation and consequences.
  • Make an ethical business decision and support it for different scenarios.
  • Identify and resolve ethical issues in the event of a conflict of interest in terms of professional ethical values.

  • Interpret the organogram of an organization and indicate each employee's place in the organization.
  • Explain an organization's expectations of each employee's position and how performance is monitored and measured.
  • Identify types of conflict that could arise in a team or group and demonstrate strategies to deal with issues in role-play situations.
  • Explore strategies for creating a positive working environment in a team or group and indicate the role of the team leader in this.
  • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of a group or team based on reflection and performance.
  • Identify situations causing concern or dissent in a group or team to decide on an appropriate management strategy.
  • Develop a plan of action to achieve group or team goals.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Identify labor legislation and policy and indicate who is covered.
  • Analyze legislation and policy, showing how they interact and support the South African constitution.
  • Explain the concept of freedom of association with reference to employers and employees.
  • Explain the concept of unfair labor practice and dismissal with examples.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative assessments include tests, assignments, industry or practical projects, and a Portfolio of Evidence/Research Project.
  • Formative assessments contribute 40% towards the final mark.
  • A 3-hour examination per module contributes 60% towards the final mark.
  • Examination papers are internally examined and externally moderated.
  • External moderators are appointed according to the institution's assessment policy.
  • The appointment procedure for external moderators is outlined in the institutional examinations' manual.
