Advanced Diploma in Analytical Chemistry

Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences - Physical Sciences

Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Title: Advanced Diploma in Analytical Chemistry

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with specialist knowledge, skills, and values in the field of Analytical Chemistry. They will be able to:

  • Plan and undertake chemical analysis using specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Undertake first-line maintenance on the equipment.
  • Select an appropriate technique and strategy for chemical analysis problem-solving.
  • Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot advanced instruments for chemical analysis.
  • Organize and manage the laboratory workspace for safe, effective, and efficient work.
  • Critically evaluate experimentally-derived data.
  • Communicate effectively through oral and written presentations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry and operating principles of chemical and pharmaceutical industries and the role of chemical analysis.

Rationale:

In response to directives from the Department of Higher Education and Training, this qualification provides specialized post-diploma training for learners with a Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent qualification to acquire advanced analytical chemistry-related knowledge. The qualification meets the needs expressed by representatives and stakeholders from the local chemistry industry for specialized training in analytical techniques.

Input from an Advisory Board comprising academic staff and industry representatives, including a local pharmaceutical company, a local cable producer, and a national petrochemical company, has guided the development of this qualification. Modern laboratories rely on sophisticated instrumentation, requiring higher levels of skill and theoretical knowledge than provided in a two-year Diploma program.

Learners will primarily come from the Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, having completed in-service training in the local chemical industry or having work experience in the field. With a small intake of no more than 15 learners, this qualification ensures hands-on instrumentation training for each student, enhancing their employability in modern industrial settings.

Outcomes

  1. Select an appropriate technique and strategy to make use of chemical analysis in the solution of a problem.
  2. Operate, calibrate and troubleshoot advanced instruments for chemical analysis.
  3. Organise and manage the laboratory workspace in order to work safely, effectively and efficiently.
  4. Critically evaluate experimentally-derived data.
  5. Communicate effectively through oral and written presentations.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry and operating principles of chemical and pharmaceutical industries and the role and importance of chemical analysis in the context of those industries.
