Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The Bachelor of Education Honours (B. Ed Hons) aims to prepare learners for research-based postgraduate studies in a field of education. It serves to consolidate and deepen learners' knowledge of the field and develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of that field. This qualification demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence. Learners will engage critically with current educational issues and consider the implications for their educational practice through modular activities and assignments.

At the exit level, learners are expected to:

  1. Have acquired a sound knowledge base and critical understanding of education.
  2. Be able to act as academic leaders and/or experts in education, training, and development.
  3. Conduct independent inquiry in a specialized area of education, training, or development, and report findings academically.

Rationale:

The B. Ed Hons at Rhodes University focuses on continuing professional development for teachers, with an emphasis on critical thinking and responsiveness to educational challenges. It addresses the long-term need in the Eastern Cape to provide opportunities for teacher professional development to enhance the quality of education. The qualification lays a foundation of educational knowledge, supports the development of research competence and reflexive practice for educators, and prepares learners for future research at the master's level.

Outcomes

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Educational ideas and issues relevant to a South and Southern African context are analysed and evaluated.
  • Issues around creativity and democracy in education are identified and discussed.
  • The political and social arena of curriculum construction is analysed and appreciated.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Ethical and defensible responses to key educational issues in an area of specialization are formulated and presented.
  • Collaboration with others in response to current educational issues is demonstrated.
  • Theoretical responses in an area of educational specialization are critically evaluated.
  • Academic texts relevant to the field of education are critically engaged with.
  • A critically and empirically informed understanding of the socio-cultural, historical, and material contexts of education is demonstrated.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Consideration of research design options and decisions about appropriate research methods.
  • Reporting on small-scale educational research in a systematic, professional, and academically appropriate way.
  • Engagement with the ethics of conducting educational research.
  • Presentation of small-scale educational research in a systematic, professional, and academically appropriate manner, both orally and in writing.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative and summative assessments are designed to facilitate learner growth and development.
  • Summative assessments include written examinations that comply with the University's Policy on Assessment.
  • Assessment should be open, transparent, and use multiple forms of assessment.
  • External examining policy ensures good practice.
  • Assessment results are internally examined, then sent to external examiners for moderation.
  • Benchmarking of learner achievements at the exit level and external examination by qualified academics.
  • Finalization of results by the Head of Department and submission to the Registrar's office for processing.
