Bachelor of Education Honours (BEdHons) in Language Education

Purpose:

The Bachelor of Education Honours (BEdHons) in Language Education aims to enrich and deepen undergraduate training by focusing on research-based language teaching practices. Upon completion of the program, learners will be able to:

  • Develop integrated dictionary education programs
  • Provide evidence of classroom assessments and analyze them using research-based methods
  • Conduct a critical literature review in the emerging discipline of creative writing
  • Explain and discuss core concepts and practices in education using relevant literature
  • Understand key features of research methodologies

Rationale:

This qualification stands out from general Honours programs by enhancing expertise in language teaching and learning. The significance of languages in education is paramount for learners' success and literacy development from the Foundation Phase onwards. It is imperative for educators to deepen their comprehension of language as a tool for empowerment and information processing, rooted in research-based language teaching practices that form the foundation of education at all levels. Therefore, this qualification aims to:

  • Cultivate leadership and mentorship skills in language education at the postgraduate level
  • Address the pressing need for literacy development
  • Highlight the role of language in cognitive development and academic progress

  2. Draw on the literature to explain and discuss certain core concepts and practices in education. 3 .A literature review in the emerging discipline of creative writing is critically conducted.
  3. Provides evidence of classroom assessments and research-based analysis of such assessments.
  4. Develop integrated dictionary education programmes.

  • Make a contribution of folklore to literacy development.
  • Demonstrate the art of writing in different contexts for different purposes.
  • Demonstrate genre-based writing within pedagogical theories.
  • Create, develop, and review learning materials (texts and visuals/screen).
  • Demonstrate deep insight into cultural implications in South African mono- and multicultural contexts.

Associated Assessment Criteria Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Develop theories of creativity and teaching creative writing.
  • Construct and evaluate models of the creative writing process.
  • Explain the impact of these models on creative writing instruction design and assessment.
  • Conduct practice-as-research (PaR) through active participation in workshops.
  • Produce and reflect upon own creative writing process and product.
  • Plan creative writing lessons within the context of the school curriculum for languages.

Associated Assessment Criteria Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Develop context-sensitive and research-based approaches to remediation of literacy learning.
  • Understand emergent and conventional literacy in the primary school.
  • Examine and investigate the reading performance of young learners.
  • Outline procedures for developing, monitoring, and evaluating a coherent research-based literacy instructional programme and assessment system.
  • Develop a critical stance towards the teaching and assessment of language and literacy.

Associated Assessment Criteria Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Explain lexicographical terms.
  • Distinguish dictionary typologies.
  • Understand dictionary structures and functions.
  • Analyse, compare, and criticise pedagogical dictionaries.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Conduct at least two opportunities of formative assessment.
  • Collect various kinds of evidence of learning.
  • Provide constructive feedback on the learning process.
  • Clearly stipulate assessment procedures and criteria according to the institution's assessment policy.
  • Provide feedback in oral and/or written format, clearly explaining and justifying it.
