Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Outline

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to produce skilled and well-equipped registered professional EHPs who can contribute to improving community health and the environment. Qualified learners will be able to:

  • Apply ethics, relevant legislation, and professional behavior in the Environmental Health field.
  • Integrate and apply scientific principles and knowledge to Environmental Health sciences.
  • Undertake Work Integrated Learning (WIL) practices in both the institution and the workplace.
  • Manage Environmental Health risks and programs focused on prevention.
  • Manage Environmental Health services.
  • Demonstrate project management skills and conduct Environmental Health research.
  • Exhibit interpersonal relations and professional behavior aligned with ethical standards.

Rationale:

The Bachelor of Environmental Health qualification aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to address public health issues related to the environment. These issues encompass various factors in the environment that can impact human health and quality of life. Environmental Health focuses on identifying, correcting, controlling, minimizing, and preventing factors that could harm present and future generations. This field is crucial as it is a human right and is supported by the Constitution of South Africa. Graduates will be competent EHPs in both public and private sectors, able to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Outcomes

  1. Apply the principles of ethics, relevant legislation and professional behaviour within the Environmental Health milieu.
  2. Integrate and apply knowledge and scientific principles to Environmental Health sciences.
  3. Undertake WIL practices in the institution and in the workplace [WIL practices includes theoretical (Work-directed theoretical learning (WDTL) and Problem-based learning (PBL) to more practical forms (Project-based learning (PjBL) and Workplace learning (WPL)].
  4. Manage Environmental Health risks within natural, socio-economic, built and working environments within the scope of profession.
  5. Manage Environmental Health programmes focussing on prevention [Range: manage refers to: design, develop, implement and evaluate].
  6. Manage Environmental Health services [Range: Manage will involve financial, human, physical resources, as well as the planning, control and utilisation thereof].
  7. Demonstrate project management skills within a project management life-cycle.
  8. Conduct and participate in Environmental Health research.
  9. Demonstrate interpersonal relations and professional behaviour in terms of the ethical code.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Application of ethical and legal responsibilities in interactions with clients, colleagues, and the community.
  • Adherence to ethical rules of the HPCSA, scope of the profession, Environmental Health services, and Batho Pele principles.
  • Demonstrated professional and personal growth through assuming various roles in the Environmental Health milieu.
  • Effective communication skills with community groups, NGOs, clients, and media.
  • Fulfillment of registration requirements with the HPCSA and other professional bodies.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Integration and application of physical, chemical, biochemical, anatomical, and physiological principles in identifying and managing environmental health risks.
  • Integration of social and behavioural principles through community outreach and project facilitation.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Demonstration of expected outcomes in collaboration with workplace mentors.
  • Completion of portfolios in accordance with learning experiences and mentor agreements.
  • Demonstration of project initiation, planning, management, monitoring, and evaluation skills.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Identification and assessment of health risks within Environmental Health using applicable strategies.
  • Compilation of comprehensive risk management plans in accordance with legislation and best practices.
  • Evaluation of intervention measures and monitoring of risk management plans.
  • Development of verification tools and public participation in risk management.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Conducting a situational analysis in the community and designing sustainable health promotion programs.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary health promotion programs and using participatory methodologies in Environmental Health promotion.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Application of administrative skills in context and development of skills development plans.
  • Review and development of policies, legislation, and guidelines.
  • Management of human resources, labor relations, and financial matters within Environmental Health services.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Planning, implementation, management, and assessment of projects adhering to project management principles.
  • Application of time-management and financial principles within projects.
  • Communication of project results to relevant stakeholders.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 8:

  • Identification of research themes, application of research principles, and management of research data.
  • Development and implementation of intervention measures, communication of research results, and feedback to stakeholders.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 9:

  • Development and management of communication strategies for Environmental Health services.
  • Handling of all forms of communication promptly, politely, and professionally.
  • Facilitation of conflict resolution and application of communication and marketing strategies related to Environmental Health.
  • Seeking opportunities for public speaking on Environmental Health issues.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment based on institution and faculty assessment policies.
  • Observation of tasks, evaluation of products, formative and summative assessments are conducted.
  • Formative assessments during learning process and summative assessments for competency evaluation.
