Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is to strengthen the subject specialisation of practising teachers with a prior qualification in Mathematics Teaching at a lower level, or to retrain teachers for the teaching of Mathematics in the FET Phase. The qualification enables teachers to develop disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational learning reflexive competences in teaching and learning in the particular subject/phase in school. It aims to deepen subject matter knowledge, general principles, and methodology in Further Education and Training (FET) Mathematics teaching.

Aims:

  • Fostering self-reflexivity and self-understanding
  • Development of competences to organise learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts

Target Groups:

  • Teachers retraining in a new teaching subject
  • Teachers upgrading to specialize in FET Mathematics
  • Teachers wanting to strengthen their field of study in FET Mathematics teaching

Learning Outcomes:

Upon qualifying, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe and explain their understanding of social justice education
  2. Construct a research plan, analyze and report data, and conduct critical reading and writing
  3. Apply applicable education theory in practice
  4. Apply Mathematics content and pedagogical knowledge to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics

Rationale:

The institution has a history of providing teacher education and training and aims to address the national priority of specialist training to upgrade teacher qualifications. The Advanced Certificate in FET Mathematics Teaching responds to the national need for qualified FET Mathematics teachers. Through consultations and needs analysis, a shortage of adequately qualified teachers for FET Mathematics has been identified. The qualification not only upgrades existing teachers' qualifications but also offers specialist education to strengthen the knowledge base of teachers. It aims to widen the pool of teachers who can teach Mathematics in the FET Phase and address the lack of specific mathematics content knowledge among South African teachers.

The curriculum includes additional credits for a deepening of content knowledge to meet specific needs. The qualification is designed to align with national requirements and provide the necessary skills and knowledge needed for effective FET Mathematics teaching.

Outcomes

  1. Applying Mathematics content, pedagogical knowledge and practices to deal with the teaching and learning of Mathematics in order to improve the quality of education.
  2. Understanding of applicable education theory and its uses, influences, relation to practice, as well as to society and change.
  3. Construct a research plan, including appropriate methods, feasible and researchable questions, analyse and report data, as well as conduct critical reading and writing.
  4. Describe and explain their theoretical and conceptual understanding of social justice education as well as critically examine the South African education context and evaluate their own professional context and practice in terms of social justice education.

  • Mathematics content and pedagogical knowledge are effectively applied to enhance the quality of education.
  • Decisions and actions align with the South African Mathematics curriculum framework.
  • Educational debates are translated into practice by integrating educational theory and Mathematics Education foundations.
  • Teaching, learning, and assessment are effectively managed with a strong foundation in Mathematics education.
  • Development of an agent of change attitude to improve Mathematics Education in schools.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Understanding of theory, its construction, and the relationship between theory and practice.
  • Application of foundational theories in Mathematics Education to drive international research in mathematics education.
  • Utilization of mathematics education research to enhance policy and practice.

  • Construction of a research plan/design/proposal.
  • Selection of an appropriate research method.
  • Development of feasible and researchable questions.
  • Analysis and reporting of data.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Critical examination of the social, cultural, and historical context of South African education.
  • Problematisation and evaluation of professional practice through a social justice education lens.
  • Proposal of creative and innovative strategies for promoting social justice in professional practices.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Demonstration of applied competence through various formative assessment methods.
  • Summative assessment through examinations aligned with the programme and module outcomes.
  • Integration of theory and practice in assessment activities.
  • Adherence to the University's Assessment Policy.
