Advanced Certificate in Intermediate Phase Teaching

Education, Training and Development - Schooling

Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The purpose of the Advanced Certificate in Intermediate Phase Teaching is to empower teachers with more specialised knowledge and more advanced skills and competencies, particularly in problem-solving. This will enable them to effectively recognize, assess, and manage teaching and learning challenges commonly faced by intermediate phase teachers and learners. Additionally, the program aims to provide teachers with an enhanced understanding of values that can contribute to the growth and development of intermediate phase learners as well as the teaching profession as a whole. The target audience for this certificate program is teachers instructing students in grades four to seven. The curriculum includes three specialized subjects focusing on the Teaching of English First Additional Language, Fundamental Mathematical Concepts, and addressing Barriers to Learning.

Rationale:

The Department of Higher Education and Training underscores the importance of teachers continuously improving their teaching practices and advancing their careers to deliver quality education to students. A significant number of teachers lack adequate subject knowledge, while others may desire to switch subjects or teaching phases. Therefore, teachers with existing qualifications should engage in continuous professional development programs to deepen their subject expertise, enhance their qualifications, or transition to teaching different subjects or in different phases to revitalize their teaching careers. The Advanced Certificate in Intermediate Phase Teaching (ACT) qualification caters to educators seeking specialization in a new teaching subject, those transitioning from the Foundation Phase (FP) to the Intermediate Phase (IP), educators looking to strengthen their subject and/or phase specialization, or individuals holding a three-year Diploma in education and wishing to upgrade their qualifications. This certificate program also enables teachers to advance in their academic pursuits while promoting personal and social well-being.
