Purpose and Rationale

The goal of the programme is to provide graduates with the following skills and knowledge:

  • Specialised knowledge in Geological Sciences through in-depth study.
  • Practical and applied knowledge of research methodology.
  • Ability to solve problems independently and in teams, specifically in areas of geology of ore deposits.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate theory, methods, and techniques in the Geological Sciences.
  • Strong communication skills in spoken and written English, suitable for both expert and non-expert audiences.

The graduates of this programme will be equipped to serve the community in various important capacities in both the public and private sectors, contributing their specialized knowledge in Geological Sciences.

Outcomes

  1. Have an in-depth, specialised knowledge relating to advanced aspects of Geology and particularly to Ore Deposits.
  2. Understand and be able to apply advanced concepts in Geology and to Ore Deposits.
  3. Be able to access information from a wide range of sources, integrate, analyse and critically evaluate it.
  4. Be able to distil a problem into its component parts.
  5. Be able to consider a range of problems, options and solutions, and implement decisions based on sound academic foundations, and to be able to access information from a wider range of sources.
  6. Be able to solve a problem by building up solutions to component parts of the problem in an integrative manner.
  7. Be able to communicate effectively, both in written and oral presentations.
  8. Develop and exercise responsibly, practical laboratory and/or field-based technical skills applicable to vocational careers and to have responsible and effective personal organisation skills.
  9. Undertake and execute the scientific method through analysing and critically evaluating data and results by undertaking independent research.
  10. Be culturally sensitive and have developed sound professional attitudes.

Assessment Criteria

Geological Sciences Honours Programme Assessment Criteria:

  1. Module Completion:

    • Pass the required number of modules in-depth study in Geological Sciences.
    • Assessment criteria: accuracy and lucidity in answers to examination questions, clear evidence of understanding theoretical concepts.
  2. Honours Project Submission:

    • Submit a project assessed as satisfactory by internal and external examiners.
    • Criteria: understanding of basic principles, accuracy of factual material and reasoning, ability to relate course parts to the problem, reference to other sources, clarity of presentation.
  3. Competence Demonstration:

    • Write logical and coherent essays, assignments, research reports.
    • Contribute to class discussions.
    • Satisfactorily answer exam questions.
    • Undertake an independent research project under staff supervision.
  4. Language and Presentation Skills:

    • Written and oral presentations must meet standards for English language use and structural organization.
    • Presentation of assignments, exam questions, project reports, and formal seminars must be of acceptable quality.
  5. Research Project Integration:

    • Compulsory project integrates specific outcomes to achieve Exit Level Outcomes.
    • Difficult to state objective criteria for assessment of outcome 10, but demeanour and etiquette are indicators.
  6. Student Commitment and Awareness:

    • Students expected to show commitment to studies and awareness of interactions with others.
  7. Integrated Assessment Strategy:

    • University reforming assessment strategies to include applied competence assessment.
    • Combination of continuous assessment and traditional exams to assess integration of learning outcomes.

The Honours Project acts as a "capstone" to showcase a learner's competence in integrating theory, technique, and methodology from various sources to solve problems or develop theories.
