Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview:

The purpose of this qualification is to promote recognition of the interconnectedness of human culture. It emphasizes the need to adopt a wide variety of learning and research strategies across established disciplinary boundaries to build up as complete a picture as possible when not all the relevant material is extant.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an ability to make connections across the subcategories of their study of ancient civilisation and so to recognise the interconnectedness of culture.
  2. Read critically and analyse a variety of texts (in English translation) in a manner appropriate to the relevant genre.
  3. Analyse archaeological documentation drawn from a variety of media and understanding of the importance of situating objects chronologically within a developmental continuum.
  4. Appropriately synthesise information drawn from a wide variety of textual and archaeological documentation, to form a unified image of selected aspects of the ancient Mediterranean world and an understanding of its relations with other ancient cultures.
  5. Apply the first three outcomes stated above in closely supervised study introducing research techniques appropriate to the textual genres and the archaeological media and periods.
  6. Understand the broad ancient Mediterranean cultural context, and the formative and normative influence this has had on the modern western world and its values and can analyse this influence comparatively and contrastively within the South African context.
  7. Demonstrate a more extensive familiarity with information technology and the ability to make use of the Internet in seeking information.
  8. Work both individually and as a member of a group.

Integrated Assessment: Assessment across the qualification forms an integral part of the teaching and learning process. In achieving the learning outcomes, learners are required to comply with the minimum assessments set for the level of the qualification, as per the Institution's Assessment Policy. Assessments vary depending on the module and the outcomes of the module, however, all modules are formatively and summatively assessed. The assessment of theoretical modules is usually in the form of assignments, practicals, and written tests or examinations.
