Purpose and Rationale

Objective

The objective of this course is to provide students with advanced core knowledge and skills about various specialized aspects of operations research. The course aims to equip students for a career in quantitative areas of business/commercial management.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced theoretical and applied knowledge in operations research.
  2. Apply operations research techniques to decision-making processes in business/commercial management.
  3. Analyze complex problems and develop suitable solutions using quantitative methods.
  4. Lead quantitative management fields in economic sectors effectively.
  5. Contribute to sustainable development, growth, and prosperity within their areas of work.
  6. Prepare for further studies at the master's level in operations research.

This course will focus on developing competent leaders who possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to make informed decisions and drive organizational success in quantitative management fields. Students will be equipped with the tools to navigate complex challenges and make strategic decisions that contribute to the overall prosperity of their organizations.

Outcomes

  1. Read and interpret (especially quantitative) management-related literature, implying the ability for independent learning from source material.
  2. Use scientific methodology in the acquisition of quantitative data, information and knowledge.
  3. Analyse, organise and critically evaluate relevant information.
  4. Identify and solve diverse and complex problems in a critical and creative way by applying appropriate Operations Research methodology.

  7. Communicate effectively, using graphical, statistical, mathematical and language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentation.

  10. Understand and apply a range of advanced quantitative techniques, procedures and experimental approaches required for this programme.

  12. Learn appropriate lessons from these experiences in order to solve problems in an optimal way.
  13. demonstrate an appreciation of the advantages of precision and economy of thought and logical expression as hallmarks of Operations Research.

  15. Indicate the prevalence and the importance of variation/change in phenomena, and show expertise in different techniques for analysing variation/change.

Honours Graduate in Operations Research Skills:

  • Analytical Skills: Able to analyze business operations and projects on strategic, tactical, and operational levels.
  • Planning Skills: Capable of planning and implementing strategies for business operations and supply chain management.
  • Quantitative Decision-Making: Can make data-driven decisions to optimize operations and resource allocation.
  • Leadership Abilities: Able to lead a team in analyzing, planning, implementing, and monitoring operations.
  • Resource Management: Skilled in allocating and distributing scarce resources efficiently.
  • Preparation for Masters Studies: Equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue further studies in Operations Research.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: Assessments cover a variety of procedures to evaluate the student's understanding and application of Operations Research concepts.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Assignments: Engage in assignments that require application of knowledge from various disciplines.
  • Practical Projects: Complete at least one large project, either practical or theoretical, individually or in teams.
