Purpose and Rationale

Purpose: The purpose of the Bachelor of Science in Sport Recreation and Exercise Science is to provide a comprehensive qualification covering all aspects of sport and exercise science in the initial two years of undergraduate study. In the final year, students must choose between specializing in Biokinetics or Exercise Science. Graduates will be equipped to:

  • Explain, demonstrate, and lead effective sport, recreation, and exercise sessions.
  • Explain, demonstrate, and coach basic sport skills.
  • Evaluate fundamental sport skills.
  • Explain and apply the rules of various sports and recreational activities.

Rationale: The field of sport, leisure, recreation, and fitness is experiencing rapid growth, as indicated by recent skills surveys conducted by the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA). There is a need to enhance capacity in sport management to ensure competence in organizing sport activities, competitions, teams, and facilities. With increasing opportunities to host national and international sports events in South Africa, there is a demand for professionals capable of meeting the standards required for such events.

The sports marketing industry, including sport sponsorships, is a substantial multimillion-rand sector, evident in the proliferation of dedicated sports TV channels reflecting public interest in sports. This qualification aims to prepare graduates for various roles within the sports industry, including:

  • NGO (Non-Governmental Organizations)
  • Public sector (National, Provincial, District, Regional, Local, and agencies)
  • Entrepreneurial endeavors (Manufacturing, Tourism, Sports skills, Sport goods, Management organizations, Information technology)
  • Services sector (Sports medicine, Talent development, Wellness, Consulting, Coaching, PR and communication, Marketing, Events)
  • Fitness industry (Trainers, Health promotion, Physical activities)
  • Administration roles (Clubs, Facilities, Federations, Teams)
  • Educational institutions (Schools, Academies, Tertiary institutions)

Outcomes

  1. Assess and interpret the health and fitness status of individuals.
  2. Explain, demonstrate and lead effective sport, fitness and conditioning programmes.
  3. Conduct effective exercise programmes for special populations, i.e., chronically diseased, physically challenged and elderly.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria:

  • Demonstrate competencies in physical fitness testing
  • Design and implement exercise programmes
  • Organise and operate fitness facilities and resources
  • Demonstrate leadership and competencies in training and supervision of exercise personnel
  • Evaluate exercise programmes
  • Develop appropriate exercise programmes to address specific population needs

Integrated Assessment:

The institution implements a Continuous Assessment System. Assessment consists of numerous assessment events throughout the year using a variety of assessment instruments such as tests, essays, practical reports, project reports, and oral presentations.

Formative Assessment:

Learning and assessment are integrated with various modules included in the qualification. Different types of formative assessment will be applied according to the nature of each module. Assessment during the year will consist of a combination of assignments including activities such as portfolios and self-assessment tasks.

Summative Assessment:

Examinations or equivalent assessments, like a portfolio of evidence, will assess a representative selection of outcomes practiced and assessed in the formative stage. Summative assessments will also test the learner's ability to manage and integrate a large body of knowledge to achieve the stated outcomes of the module.
