Purpose and Rationale

Program Overview: Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Herbal Medicine

The Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Herbal Medicine program aims to equip graduates with inter-disciplinary knowledge and applied competence in the scientific and health aspects of indigenous herbs with medicinal and nutritional value. This unique qualification will provide students with a deep understanding of the safety, efficacy, and mechanisms of action of herbal medicines and nutritional supplements, filling a critical gap in the rapidly growing Alternative Health industry.

  1. Increasing Intellectual Capacity: Addressing the lack of scientific expertise in the Alternative Health industry by enhancing intellectual capacity through specialized scientific knowledge.

  2. Fostering Industry Innovation: Producing graduates capable of innovatively developing and sustaining the Alternative Health industry through their emphasis on research and scientific rigor.

  3. High-Quality Graduates: Providing the industry with high-quality graduates whose scientific training enhances their market value and competitiveness in the job market.

Research Development: Stimulating research capacity that will not only benefit the Alternative Health industry but also foster growth in Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs at universities, creating a collaborative network on national, continental, and global levels.

By offering this program, we aim to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and scientific understanding, thereby contributing to the advancement and professionalization of the Alternative Health industry. Our graduates will be well-equipped to make significant contributions to this evolving field through their expertise in indigenous herbal medicine.

Outcomes

  1. Display specialised scholastic and basic research skills in indigenous herbs of medicinal and nutritional value.
  2. Possess specialised in-depth knowledge of indigenous herbs of medicinal and nutritional value.
  3. Have the capability of information processing at the level of analysis, transformation and evaluation of abstract data and concepts, together with formulation of appropriate responses to contextually resolve problems.
  4. Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader community, using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support.
  5. Assume responsibility for planning, resourcing and managing processes within broad parameters for largely defined activities and assume complete accountability for determining, achieving and evaluating personal and/or group output.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

  • Perform a full range of standard and non-standard procedures
  • Conduct procedures in non-standard combinations across indigenous herbs
  • Work with complex and variable routine and non-routine contexts
  • Conduct research reports
  • Complete mini research projects
  • Produce a dissertation

Integrated Assessment:

The Faculty has implemented a Continuous Assessment System which includes:

  • Multiple assessment events throughout the year
  • Utilization of various assessment instruments such as tests, essays, practical reports, project reports, and oral presentations.
