Purpose and Rationale

The aim of this qualification is to provide an opportunity to students to broaden their knowledge in Sociology within the Faculty of Arts. This provides an opportunity to:

  • Read extensively and become acquainted with classic texts in the Sociology discipline.
  • Become involved in conversations with the most important thinkers in the field.
  • Take part in debates with confidence.
  • Acquire a solid basis that prepares the student for Postgraduate research.

This opportunity not only broadens but also deepens insight in the discipline as specified.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a broad and integrated knowledge of the current scholarly discourse in Sociology.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding through the reading and interpretation of classic and contemporary Sociology texts.
  3. Express Sociology abstract thoughts in a clear, logical and coherent manner in writing.
  4. Reflect the results of an independent Sociology literature survey on a selected topic in a balanced and coherent way.
  5. Demonstrate skills to engage in Postgraduate Sociology research.

  2. Reading and Interpretation of Sociology Texts:

    • Analyzes and interprets texts effectively.
  3. Expression of Abstract Sociology Thoughts:

    • Communicates abstract ideas clearly and logically.
    • Presents arguments in a coherent manner.
  4. Reflection on Literature Survey:

    • Reflects on the results of an independent literature survey in a balanced way.
    • Presents a coherent summary of findings.
  5. Demonstration of Postgraduate Research Skills:
