Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Aim

The aim of this qualification is to broaden students' knowledge in Anthropology within the Faculty of Arts. It provides an opportunity for students to:

  • Read extensively
  • Become acquainted with classic texts in Anthropology
  • Engage in conversations with important thinkers in the discipline
  • Take part in debates with confidence

This foundation equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue Postgraduate research in Anthropology. This offers the chance to not only broaden but also deepen insights within the discipline.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a broad and integrated knowledge of the current scholarly discourse in Anthropology.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding through the reading and interpretation of classic and contemporary Anthropology texts.
  3. Express Anthropology abstract thoughts in a clear, logical and coherent manner in writing.
  4. Reflect the results of an independent Anthropology literature survey on a selected topic in a balanced and coherent way.
  5. Demonstrate skills to engage in Postgraduate Anthropology research.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Criteria for Postgraduate Anthropology Course:

  1. Demonstration of Broad and Integrated Knowledge: Students are expected to showcase a deep understanding of current scholarly discussions in Anthropology, drawing from a wide range of sources and perspectives.

  2. Engagement with Classic and Contemporary Texts: The ability to read, interpret, and critically analyze both classic and contemporary Anthropology texts is essential for demonstrating a strong foundation in the field.

  3. Clear Expression of Abstract Anthropology Thoughts: Students should be able to articulate abstract ideas in a clear, logical, and coherent manner in their written assignments, reflecting a deep understanding of theoretical concepts.

  4. Balanced Reflection of Literature Survey: Through independent literature surveys on selected topics, students should be able to present a balanced and coherent overview of existing research, highlighting key debates and findings in the field.

  5. Demonstration of Postgraduate Research Skills: The course will assess students' ability to engage in postgraduate-level research, including developing research proposals, conducting literature reviews, and critically evaluating existing scholarship.

Integrated Assessment Methods:

  • Examinations: Assessments will include exams that test students' knowledge of key concepts, theories, and methodologies in Anthropology.
  • Literature Surveys: Students will be required to conduct literature surveys on specific topics, demonstrating their ability to critically engage with existing research.
