Qualification:

Postgraduate Specialisation in Mathematics

Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is to consolidate and deepen the student's expertise in Mathematics, while developing research capacity in the methodology and techniques of the discipline. This will be achieved through conducting and reporting on a research topic under supervision, tailored specifically to Mathematics.

Rationale:

  • South Africa needs to grow the number of Postgraduates in Mathematics to expand the local leadership in innovative economic and scholarly activities.

  • The qualification will provide practical training essential for professional scientists working in various environments.

  • It will equip learners with the necessary tools to pursue a path towards becoming professional academic practitioners in their disciplines, as many South African Universities require a Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours level qualification for further Postgraduate education.

  • The qualification will focus on academic training, including understanding scientific literature, and furthering literacy, numeracy, and computer literacy skills introduced at the BSc level.

  • Mathematics is a vast field with applications in numerous branches of human activity such as science, engineering, medicine, and commerce, making it a crucial area of study for future professionals.
