Purpose and Rationale

Qualification in Food and Nutrition

Purpose: The qualification aims to provide a thorough education in Food and Nutrition, enabling graduates who are already health professionals to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and participatory manner to address health, food, and nutrition issues within the community and public sector.

Rationale: This qualification is designed to meet the specific developmental needs of the Southern African region, particularly in addressing the prevalent nutrition challenges. In the rural areas, issues such as undernutrition among children under five and overnutrition among the adult population are prevalent. The Limpopo Province, in particular, faces a dual challenge of malnutrition, poverty, and high unemployment rates among women. Graduates of this program will be equipped to develop and implement nutrition intervention strategies to combat these pressing issues and contribute to the overall improvement of nutrition-related problems in the region.

Outcomes

  1. A comprehensive understanding of principles of nutrition particularly as applied to community-based, integrated nutrition programmes.
  2. A comprehensive understanding of methodologies used in nutrition assessment.
  3. A demonstrable ability to design, implement and evaluate intersectoral programmes aimed at addressing nutritional problems at all levels.
  4. A demonstrable capacity for project management in the context of health programming as a competent programme manager at any level.
  5. A demonstrable ability to apply innovative programmatic approaches in solving community nutrition related problems.
  6. A demonstrable ability to disseminate health and nutrition information for purposes of nutrition awareness and health promotion.
  7. A demonstrable ability to participate in research project development and implementation.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Apply critical analytic skills to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition integrated programmes.
  • Analyze the impact of nutrition intervention programmes on health and development.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Demonstrate and apply nutritional assessment techniques.
  • Show proficiency in dietary analysis using computer software.
  • Understand methods for assessing the nutritional status of an individual.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Apply critical analytic thinking in interpreting policy regarding the health and nutritional status impact on the community.
  • Exhibit a clear understanding of policies and regulations relating to food and agricultural products.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Apply critical analytic skills to evaluate management and control systems of nutritional services at district and community levels.
  • Demonstrate management development and quality assurance skills in planning and managing nutrition projects.
  • Display teamwork in project design and management.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Analyze the relationship between management and organizational theories.
  • Evaluate the impact of nutrition intervention strategies on the nutritional status of the community.
  • Apply critical analytic skills in evaluating nutrition interventions.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and utilize teaching materials.
  • Effectively communicate nutrition and health messages to diverse communities.
  • Showcase proficiency in various communication techniques.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Apply skills in proposal writing for the preparation of proposals.
  • Critically analyze nutrition research results and their implications for good health.
  • Demonstrate applied research skills during data collection.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Candidates will be assessed through tests, assignments, presentations, project reports, and written examinations at the end of each semester.
  • The research project will be assessed by internal and external examiners at the end of the year (summative assessment).
