Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

Upon completion of this qualification, learners will be able to implement gender-sensitive policies across public and private sectors. They will play a leading role in addressing gender parity, in line with the requirements outlined in the South African constitution.

Rationale:

The purpose of this Honours Degree is to advance equity and social justice by addressing gender-related issues that cut across society. The aim is to uplift marginalized groups and promote societal transformation. This program was created to tackle the historical legacies of racial, gender, and class inequalities that have significantly impacted the social and economic landscapes, particularly in South Africa.

Graduates of this program are equipped to engage in advocacy work related to gender and issues concerning the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual, and Intersexed (LGBTI) communities. They are actively involved in key positions within Government, the Private Sector, and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate ability to write a research proposal.
  2. A demonstrable ability to identify, collect, and analyse relevant primary or secondary data to provide findings relevant to gender mainstreaming and development.
  3. A demonstrable ability to communicate research outcomes effectively.

Assessment Criteria

Exit Level Outcome 1: Formulation of research questions and rationale of study. Relate Gender theories to practice. Appraisal of recent literature on the area of gender chosen for the study.

  • Understand and apply gender theories to real-world practice.
  • Demonstrate the ability to formulate relevant research questions and provide a clear rationale for the study.
  • Critically appraise recent literature in the chosen area of gender studies.

Exit Level Outcome 2: Production of research instruments for primary data collection. Creation of library on major resources regarding gender, women studies and development. Creation of a data-bank on patriarchy, gender and violence. Interpretation of results and findings to inform policy on gender and development.

Exit Level Outcome 3: Production of written Mini-dissertation. Presentation of research methods findings and policy recommendations. Defend ideas that are outcomes of the Mini-Research.

  • Defend and justify ideas and conclusions derived from the mini-research study.

Integrated Assessment

  • Modules are externally examined by experts in the field of Gender Studies.
  • Both formative and summative assessments are conducted through examinations, assignments, and tests.
  • Mini-dissertations are evaluated by a minimum of two external examiners to ensure quality and rigor.
