Qualification Summary

Purpose:

This qualification aims to equip learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attributes to:

  • Conduct a research project of limited scope (mini dissertation) addressing a problem related to the crime phenomenon.
  • Develop and analyze policing, crime, conflict, and victimization policies.
  • Develop and evaluate programs/strategies for crime prevention and victimization.

Rationale:

This Postgraduate program at the University of Venda (Univen) builds upon the foundation laid by the Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. Graduates of this program have found employment in various sectors such as the South African Police Service, Department of Justice, Department of Correctional Services, and Non-Governmental Organizations like the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Centre. The program has a successful track record of producing competent graduates who contribute meaningfully to addressing crime-related issues in society.

Outcomes

  • Research Method: An appropriate research method must be applied to the research problem.
  • Literature Review: Conduct a literature review that is relevant to the identified problem.
  • Understanding of Theories: Demonstrate a clear understanding of theories, perspectives, approaches, and risk factors.
  • Knowledge Synthesis: Demonstrate the ability to synthesize knowledge and information in a critical and creative manner.
  • Sensitivity: Apply sensitivity in terms of cultural diversity, human rights, and crimino-ethical standards.

  • Risk Factors and Vulnerability: Determine risk factors and vulnerability at individual, organizational, and social levels.
  • Impact Analysis: Analyze the impact on the individual, organizational, and social environment.
  • Strategy Development: Develop strategies to deal with risk and vulnerability.

  • Justice Systems Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of various formal and informal justice systems.
  • Comparison: Compare formal and informal justice systems to determine effectiveness in different societies.
  • Advantages and Disadvantages: Determine advantages and disadvantages in justice systems to promote best practices.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect, collate, and analyze data on policies related to deviance, conflict, crime, and victimization.
  • Recommendations: Formulate recommendations based on the analyzed data.
  • Policy Proposals: Propose policies based on the recommendations.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment Methods: Formative assessment methods will be used to assess combinations of practical, applied, foundational, and reflective competencies in both theoretical and practical components.
