Purpose and Rationale

Program Objectives:

  1. Advanced Core Knowledge: Provide learners in the private, public, and voluntary sectors with advanced core knowledge and research skills relevant to the technical aspects of Economics and its applied branches.

  2. Promote Sustainable Growth: Equip students to promote sustainable growth and development in all sectors of the economy and society.

  3. Maximize Prosperity: Enable learners to maximize prosperity through sound economic principles and practices.

  4. Develop Competent Leaders: Develop competent leaders in the private, public, and voluntary sectors with applied fundamental and cross-functional technical knowledge and skills.

  5. Steer Sustainable Development: Equip students with the skills to steer sustainable development, growth, and prosperity in the most appropriate direction.

  6. Prepare for Specialized Studies: Provide students who wish to pursue more specialized studies in Economics with a solid academic foundation.

Outcomes

  1. Read, interpret and apply Economics and Applied Economics and collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate more advanced and technically more complex Economics information.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of Economics Theory as applied to various fields of Economics, and of the implications thereof for the analysis of various markets (e.g. product and service markets, including agricultural and transport markets, labour markets, money markets and capital markets).
  3. Demonstrate advanced understanding of the inter-relatedness of financial and real markets and of the domestic impact of international trends and events.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the economic environments, as well as of economic policy and its impact on various economic fields and enterprises, and the critical and creative application of this knowledge to the needs of various economic agents in the public (policy), private and voluntary sectors.
  5. Use of a range of advanced economic, econometric and statistical techniques or procedures and computer programmes in the analysis of data in the fields of Economics, Transport Economics or Agricultural Economics apply.
  6. Communicate more advanced and technically more complex economic issues effectively, using visual, statistical, mathematical and or language skills, including presenting research reports.
  7. Demonstrate advanced understanding of the inter-relatedness of economic, social and policy variables in problem-solving, including statistical and econometric analysis.
  8. Work effectively with others as a member of a research or policy team in the private, developmental and public sectors and to organise and manage oneself and one's personal activities responsibly and effectively.
