Purpose and Rationale

The programme focuses on educating and training Library and Information Service personnel to meet international standards. It aims to address past inequities by providing opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged communities to gain professional education in Library and Information Science.

Furthermore, the Department aims to preserve and investigate environmental and cultural resources in Southern Africa, with graduates being competent in both traditional and modern sources of information. Graduates are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the job market and serve both technologically advanced and disadvantaged sectors.

Ultimately, the programme seeks to create a well-rounded awareness of information resources and empower graduates to contribute positively to their communities.

  2. The skills of critical thinking and debate, reading and interpretation.
  3. Information Technology (IT) competencies required in the Information Society.
  4. How to acquire, search for, use and disseminate information and how to reproduce it.

Assessment Criteria

Library and Information Science Program Overview

In the Library and Information Science program, students will engage in critical reading and analysis of library information, participate in debates, and provide effective communication with peers and the broader community. Information Technology (IT) will be utilized effectively to provide library services, retrieve and manage information, and store and reproduce data as needed.
