Purpose and Rationale

Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification:

The purpose of the qualification is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of theatre, drama, and performance studies as a field of research and debate within the humanities and social sciences. By doing so, students will develop advanced intellectual and cognitive skills that enable them to solve complex problems utilizing appropriate methods and theories.

Furthermore, the qualification aims to address the need for specialist theatre practitioners in South Africa by equipping students with a comprehensive set of specialized performance, technical, and administrative skills relevant to various areas within the performing arts and entertainment industry. This will ensure that South Africa has a pool of skilled professionals who can contribute effectively to the growth and development of the industry.

Additionally, the qualification seeks to provide students with the necessary academic and practical skills to pursue more specialized further study at the Master's level. This will enable students to continue their academic and professional development in their chosen area of specialization within the performing arts and related fields.

In conclusion, the qualification aims to produce graduates who are well-rounded and equipped with the knowledge, skills, and expertise needed to succeed in the dynamic and competitive field of theatre, drama, and performance studies.

Outcomes

  1. The ability to ask appropriate questions, analyse data and map new information, under guidance, into a coherent understanding of the discipline, and the ability to solve more complex problems using appropriate methods and theories.
  2. Well-developed ability to organise and manage oneself and one's activities effectively.
  3. Well-developed ability to work with others as a member of a team, and to take responsibility for participation in such a team.
  4. Well-developed ability to organise ideas and communicate them effectively using visual, language and kinetic skills in oral, written and media formats. Specific outcomes: The successful BDram Hons student will have:
  5. Knowledge and insight into the nature, history and processes of drama, theatre, performance and their contexts, and the research methods applicable to the field.
  6. Proficiency in the application of advanced scholarly, creative, technical and performance skills in practical production (e.g. stage, radio, TV and/or film).
  7. Extensive knowledge of and some practical experience in the use of specific performance and or performance-related skills (depending on area of specialisation).

Assessment Criteria

Assessment of the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Drama and Theatre Studies (BDram Hons)

The assessment of the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Drama and Theatre Studies (BDram Hons) program is divided into two main categories:

1. Assessment of Scholastic Skills and Knowledge:

  • Form: Written and oral examinations, essays, and research projects.
  • Competence: Correct information and conceptual content, ability to interpret questions, analyze and utilize information, and communicate deductions clearly and logically following discipline-specific conventions.

2. Assessment of Creative, Performance, Technical, Administrative, and Practical Skills:

  • Form: Evaluation of practical work assignments.
  • Competence: High proficiency in specific skills taught, knowledge of related theoretical concepts and conventions, and ability to apply these skills in a practical performance context.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Form: Evaluation of practical and/or research projects where students work in teams to create a theatre production or undertake supervised research projects on theatre or performance topics.
  • Competence: Integration and activation of skills (imaginative, cognitive, writing, voice, movement, acting, and technical) learned throughout the year in a comprehensive work of theatrical communication.

The BDram Hons program aims to assess students' abilities in both scholastic knowledge and practical skills, ultimately preparing them for a successful career in drama and theatre studies.
