Purpose and Rationale

Program: Social Work Qualification

Purpose:

Upon qualifying the learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic philosophy, values, ethics, concepts, and methods of social work.
  • Understand and apply various methods and approaches to social work practice.
  • Communicate effectively with people from all walks of life.
  • Work with other social workers and professionals as members of a team.
  • Develop an analytical and critical approach to the theory and practice of social work.

Rationale:

The qualification will:

  • Provide learners with the requisite knowledge and specific skills that will enable them to practice as social workers.
  • Provide South Africa with a significant number of learners that will help to provide high-level leadership based on scholarly activity.
  • Prepare learners for a meaningful contribution to the professional development of the theory and practice of social work.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of philosophy, values, ethics, concepts and discussions methods of social work.
  2. Understand and apply the various methods and approaches to social work practice.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Role plays, fieldwork assignments, concurrent placement in community projects.
  • Six months block placements at agencies nation-wide at the start of the final year of study.
  • Evaluation of agency supervisors' reports at the end of the block placement.

Summative Assessment:

  • Fieldwork reports.
  • Class tests.
  • Semester examinations.
  • Research reports.
