Purpose and Rationale
Program: Social Work Qualification
Purpose:
Upon qualifying the learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic philosophy, values, ethics, concepts, and methods of social work.
- Understand and apply various methods and approaches to social work practice.
- Communicate effectively with people from all walks of life.
- Work with other social workers and professionals as members of a team.
- Develop an analytical and critical approach to the theory and practice of social work.
Rationale:
The qualification will:
- Provide learners with the requisite knowledge and specific skills that will enable them to practice as social workers.
- Provide South Africa with a significant number of learners that will help to provide high-level leadership based on scholarly activity.
- Prepare learners for a meaningful contribution to the professional development of the theory and practice of social work.
Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of philosophy, values, ethics, concepts and discussions methods of social work.

Assessment Criteria
Integrated Assessment:
- Formative Assessment: Role plays, fieldwork assignments, concurrent placement in community projects.
- Six months block placements at agencies nation-wide at the start of the final year of study.
- Evaluation of agency supervisors' reports at the end of the block placement.
Summative Assessment:
- Fieldwork reports.
- Class tests.
- Semester examinations.
- Research reports.
