Purpose and Rationale

Purpose

The Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase Teaching (BEd in SP and FET Teaching) Degree aims to provide a comprehensive education that empowers learners with integrated knowledge to demonstrate applied competence, commitment, and responsibility as qualified teachers. Aligned with the institution's vision, it focuses on fostering a diverse community grounded in tolerance, openness, and reason, while maintaining excellence as a research-intensive institution. The curriculum is designed to shape learners and develop attributes in graduates that reflect the institution's values.

Upon completing the BEd in SP and FET Teaching, learners will:

  1. Understand concepts, principles, theories, and procedures relevant to senior and FET phases.
  2. Apply subject and pedagogical knowledge effectively.
  3. Demonstrate self-reflexivity and self-understanding to uphold professional work ethics.
  4. Engage as active citizens who can drive and adapt to change.
  5. Possess the skills to organize learning for diverse learners in various settings.

Rationale

The implementation of the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) and the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications prompted the redesign of initial teacher education programmes. The focus shifted from compliance-driven curriculum implementation to a more professional teacher-education qualification approach. The redesign aimed to produce educators who can interpret, design, and implement curricula effectively.

By conceptualizing teacher education within a theoretical framework and curriculum perspective, the aim is to address the complexities of education in South Africa. Graduates of this program are required to register with The South African Council for Educators (SACE) before pursuing a teaching career in South Africa.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of concepts, principles and procedures as well as theories of learning relevant to the Senior and Further Education and Training Phase.
  2. Understand what learners bring to the situation by identifying areas where learning is required and construct a suitable environment for learning to be achieved by working with colleagues, learners and the community at large in an interdependent way.
  3. Adapt and transform subject competence into conceptual learning experiences.
  4. Using an integrated knowledge base demonstrates a reflective critical disposition towards the history of the education context so as to be able to reflect on professional practices and be able to act with integrity and professional work ethics.
