The Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase Teaching (BEd in SP and FET Teaching) Degree aims to provide a comprehensive education that empowers learners with integrated knowledge to demonstrate applied competence, commitment, and responsibility as qualified teachers. The implementation of the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) and the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications prompted the redesign of initial teacher education programmes. The focus shifted from compliance-driven curriculum implementation to a more professional teacher-education qualification approach. The redesign aimed to produce educators who can interpret, design, and implement curricula effectively.
By conceptualizing teacher education within a theoretical framework and curriculum perspective, the aim is to address the complexities of education in South Africa. Graduates of this program are required to register with The South African Council for Educators (SACE) before pursuing a teaching career in South Africa.
