Bachelor of City Planning Honours

Physical Planning and Construction - Physical Planning Design and Management

Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The primary purpose of the Honours Degree in City Planning is to educate and train learners in the field of City Planning at the local and metropolitan/city scales. This education aims to develop the learner's values, conceptual knowledge, and skills related to the various interconnected systems governing urban planning. Additionally, the degree aims to impart research skills to the learners.

Another significant purpose of the Honours Degree is to prepare learners for the linked Degree - the Master's in City and Regional Planning. Successful completion of the Honours Degree is a prerequisite for entry into the Master's program.

The Project B (32 Credit) component of the degree will involve the creation of a research product focusing on city-wide planning issues.

Rationale:

  1. Scarce Skill Designation: City and regional planning is classified as a scarce skill by the South African Government's Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA) to support accelerated economic growth.

  2. Addressing Priorities: City and regional planning plays a crucial role in responding to environmental, infrastructural, and socio-economic priorities at national, provincial, and local levels of governance. It provides essential spatial guidance for current and future human settlements.

  3. Recognized Profession: City and Regional Planning is a recognized profession under the Planning Professions Act of 2003.

  4. Accreditation: The current two-year Masters in City and Regional Planning is accredited by the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN), enabling corporate membership of the profession. By completing the Honours and Master's Degrees, learners can also attain corporate membership of SACPLAN.

  5. Professional Requirements: SACPLAN requires a Master's Degree for professional recognition. Only learners with a planning undergraduate degree and completion of the Honours year are eligible for professional registration.

In conclusion, the Honours Degree in City Planning serves to educate learners in a critical field with a scarcity of skilled professionals, preparing them for further specialization and professional recognition in the planning profession.
