Purpose and Rationale

Bachelor of Arts Honours in Film and Visual Media

Purpose:

The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Film and Visual Media is to prepare learners:

  • For research so they will be able to critically view films in terms of both local and global, past and present cross-medial image traditions in the arts.
  • To understand and interpret film and visual media as aesthetic and cultural texts.
  • To grasp the histories and theories surrounding film production.
  • To reflectively integrate these forms of knowledge in their own film production.

Thus, this qualification effectively integrates all the major strands of film Studies: history, analysis, hermeneutics, theory, and production.

Rationale:

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Film and Visual Media (BAHons (Film and Visual Media)) has been developed to offer an inter-disciplinary Postgraduate course in Film and Visual Media studies. In a globalized world in which visual media is of paramount importance in every sphere of life, the qualification develops the local professional landscape in both a direct and indirect sense: firstly, by producing well-integrated learners who could work in the public broadcasting or film industries, and secondly, by producing learners who are able to reflect critically upon these industries and their products.

Outcomes

  1. Understanding of key theories and research methodologies of visual examples and texts in Film and Visual Media Studies, including History and Analysis.
  2. Interpret films, and recognise the biases of specific interpretation theories.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of film as part of local and global, past and present cross-media image traditions and contexts in the arts and in visual culture.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Critically applying concepts: Analyse films as aesthetic, narrative, and/or cultural texts.
  • Discussion of key theories: Critically discuss theories of Film and Visual Media in seminars.
  • Research methodologies: Apply appropriate methodologies and reflect on the suitability of choices.
  • Interpretations of films: Produce written and oral interpretations considering shortcomings of other theories.
  • Understanding of Film History: Understand different eras in the History of Film and align with events and practitioners.
  • Interrogating multiple sources: Evaluate knowledge from various sources in Film History.
  • Ethical issues: Identify and address ethical issues based on critical reflection.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Production of a film: Research and produce a short film/documentary/music video independently.
  • Critical contextualisation: Contextualise the production in terms of cinematographic techniques and imagery within the field and history of film.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Information gathering and synthesis: Critically review information gathering, synthesis, evaluation, and management processes in Film History.
  • Creative problem-solving: Develop creative responses to problems facing the film industry.
  • Reflection on Film Production practices: Reflect on key practices and notions of Film Production to solve specific problems.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment procedures: Clearly stipulate assessment procedures and criteria according to the institution's policy.
  • Evidence of learning: Collect various kinds of evidence to monitor student progress.
  • Feedback: Provide constructive feedback on the learning process and progress in oral and/or written format.
  • Assessment instruments: Use continuous assessment seminars, essays, and examinations in Film History and Approaches to the Moving module.
  • Studio practice and research project: Assess learners continuously in planning, filming, and finalising five short films in a group.
