Bachelor of Science in Geology

Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology - Fabrication and Extraction

Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose:

The Bachelor of Science in Geology qualification aims to provide a high-quality geological education at a Bachelor's level to enhance the personal attributes of learners. It seeks to create an environment conducive to lifelong learning, recognition of prior learning, and improve the marketability and employability of graduates. Graduates will be equipped to address developmental needs and challenges in the global, national, and regional geological community.

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of geological science concepts and principles.
  • Access, evaluate, and synthesize scientific information in the field of geology.
  • Apply scientific reasoning skills to conduct research and propose solutions within geological contexts.
  • Communicate scientific understanding effectively through various mediums.
  • Solve basic geological problems both theoretically and practically.
  • Work effectively in a team setting, understanding group dynamics.
  • Apply scientific knowledge to reflect on societal and community issues, considering ethical and cultural factors.
  • Take responsibility for decisions and actions within their professional environments.

Graduates will have the opportunity to further their studies at Honours level and pursue professional recognition with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).

Rationale:

Given South Africa's vast mineral and natural resources, there is a critical need for a proficient and skilled workforce of geologists to lead the geology sector locally, in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and globally. Training a cadre of competent geologists is essential for identifying, efficiently extracting, processing, and remediating geological sites. It is crucial for the South African mining sector to reduce reliance on importing foreign geologists and instead rely on well-trained local professionals to enhance competitiveness in global markets.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles of geological science to practices within the field.
  2. Access and evaluate scientific information in a geological field, and be able to synthesise a critical review of information within a particular area of geology.
  3. Demonstrate scientific reasoning skills to be able do to research and offer solutions to problems within a geological context.
  4. Communicate scientific understanding in writing, orally and in using visual, symbolic and/or other forms of representation to professionals as well as the public.
  5. Solve basic geological problems theoretically and practically.
  6. Understand group dynamics and work effectively as a member of a team or group.
  7. Apply scientific knowledge and critically reflect on societal and community issues, taking in to account ethical and cultural considerations.
  8. Take accountability for decisions made and actions taken within their professional environment.
