Health Sciences and Social Services - Preventive Health
Purpose:
The purpose of the four-year professional Bachelor of Health Sciences in Occupational Hygiene qualification is to educate and equip learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, problem-solving abilities, and competencies required to become Occupational Hygienists. Graduates will be able to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control health hazards in the working environment to protect the health and well-being of workers and the community. They will contribute to promoting health and safety in South African workplaces, ensuring compliance with national legislation and supporting international and national initiatives by organizations such as the WHO, ILO, IOHA, DoL, DMR, and SAIOH.
Rationale:
According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), approximately 2.3 million workers die each year from occupational accidents or diseases. The ILO and WHO emphasize the importance of protecting workers from health risks in the workplace. The ILO adopted a global strategy in 2003 to improve occupational health and safety, focusing on prevention and technical assistance.
Given the high number of occupational fatalities and the international emphasis on worker health, there is a clear need for a professional degree in Occupational Hygiene to educate and train professionals to address the requirements outlined by the ILO. This qualification aligns with the WHO's Global Plan of Action on Worker's Health (2008-2017), which highlights the need for interventions to prevent and control risks in the workplace and improve access to occupational health services for all workers, including those in informal economies and agriculture.
