Purpose and Rationale

Purpose: The qualification aims to provide learners with a focused, systematic, and specialized understanding of current theory and practice in selected subfields of Business Administration, Management, and Operations. It aims to prepare learners academically and professionally to manage business establishments successfully through appropriate planning, organizing, directing, and controlling functions and processes, while considering corporate social responsibility and ethical considerations. Additionally, it aims to prepare learners for postgraduate study and provide an articulation route to a relevant Postgraduate Diploma or, in exceptional cases, a Bachelor of Honours degree at NQF Exit Level 8.

Rationale: The Advanced Diploma in Business Studies replaces a range of Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Degrees in Business Administration and Management due to the restructuring of the HEQSF. This new diploma builds on individual diplomas to provide learners with a core of business studies-related modules and specialization streams in Business Management, Marketing Management, Logistics Management, Tourism Management, Human Resource Management, and Financial Planning and Services. This one-year NQF Exit Level 7 qualification offers a focused, systematic, and specialized understanding of current theory and practice in Business, Economics, and Management Studies.

In alignment with the institution's vision and mission, the Advanced Diploma in Business Studies diversifies educational opportunities for learners. Graduates will meet the demand for skilled business managers and entrepreneurs regionally and nationally, contributing to sustainable business activity and job creation. This qualification also serves as a pathway to postgraduate study and a Bachelor Honours Degree at NQF Exit Level 8 in relevant fields.

Outcomes

  1. Integrate and apply the latest advances in strategic, operational and financial management theory, principles, concepts, practices and techniques as embodied in any one of the following specialised, elective fields: Management Practice, Marketing Management, Logistics Management, Tourism Management, Human Resource Management, Financial Planning and Services.
  2. Manage a business establishment through the application of appropriate strategic, operational and financial management and leadership principles and practices with full cognisance of corporate social responsibility, including ethical and environmental considerations.
  3. Plan, manage and conclude research activities by applying relevant business research principles and analytical techniques, and presenting findings and conclusions coherently and reliably using appropriate academic and professional discourse conventions.
  4. Use information technology and apply its methods, skills and tools in a professional and accountable manner.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Demonstrate level-appropriate competence by identifying, contextualising, analysing, and addressing typical challenges faced by middle and senior level business managers using relevant theories, principles, concepts, practices, and techniques.
  • Evaluate options and strategies and recommend well-motivated solutions.
  • Demonstrate critical awareness of various schools of thought leading to different perspectives and approaches in dealing with managerial issues including individual business decisions, applications, strategies, and ethical considerations.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Describe the relationship between internal business operations and the external environment, highlighting key factors like leadership, corporate agility, programme performance, partner synergy, and ethical, social, and environmental measures.
  • Define the commitment required by business managers in achieving business goals by relating it to programmes, products, staff development, motivation, resources, and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Link key business strategies with processes and resources to improve overall performance considering financial, market, and business indicators.
  • Analyze stakeholder perceptions to identify concerns and build positive relationships.
  • Identify instances of visionary leadership and relate them to corporate social responsibility for achieving excellence and innovation.
  • Make functional management, operational, and financial decisions based on relevant data, independently and as part of a team, determining their impact on other business areas.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Identify and formulate pertinent business-related research problems, questions, or issues.
  • Conduct literature searches to contextualise research problems and frame the area of investigation.
  • Develop a theoretical framework for research design and determine the most suitable investigation method.
  • Collect, analyse, process, and interpret relevant data using appropriate techniques, software, and tools.
  • Prepare a research report with findings, conclusions, and recommendations meeting scientific and academic standards.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Use information technology tools associated with Business Administration and Management to access, process, manage, and store information effectively.
  • Utilize relevant computer hardware and software packages for computation, communication, and information manipulation, considering application possibilities and limitations.
  • Process and interpret results and statistics accurately.
  • Distribute information timely to team members.
  • Stay updated with the latest business methods, practices, tools, and information technology.
  • Determine the impact of deterministic variables on dependent variables.
  • Conduct diagnostic tests for business viability and present results coherently.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment methods may vary based on module purpose, subject matter, and teaching approach.
  • Assessment tasks will require learners to integrate information effectively, analyze complex situations, present information appropriately, reflect on performances, and apply learning to analyze professional environments.
  • Formative assessment will include various assignments, presentations, tests, and progress checks.
  • Summative assessment will test learners' ability to communicate, integrate knowledge, and resolve problems in the subfields.
  • Practical experience will be gained through simulating managerial tasks, while research projects will be assigned for each specialization.
