Purpose and Rationale

Qualification in Creative Writing

Purpose

The primary purpose of the qualification is to develop the nature and scope of learners' knowledge of Creative Writing, enhancing their insight and stimulating their creative and scientific skills in this disciplinary field. After completion of this qualification, the learners will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Gain access to, process, and manage relevant disciplinary information independently.
  2. Demonstrate mastery of Creative Writing theory and relevant approaches in literary and language practice theory.
  3. Critically deal with the methodologies of Creative Writing and other applicable literary theories.
  4. Illustrate knowledge and insight into specific literary genres.
  5. Plan, write, edit, and prepare original creative writing in chosen genres.
  6. Form and communicate an own creative and literary perspective.
  7. Manage own critical and creative work in a competent, ethical, and professional manner.

Rationale

This Honours qualification is the first year of Postgraduate study in Creative Writing. It is designed to provide the opportunity for further intensive study in the discipline and training in concepts, research methods, and writing skills. The qualification aims to equip learners to communicate innovatively and effectively in writing within professional and artistic contexts.

Creative Writing is an academic and broadly vocational discipline that provides learners with expertise, critical understanding, and productive skills in various literary genres. The qualification offers a vocational path for learners to become creative writers, literary scholars, critics, teachers, or employees in publication and journalism fields.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate integrated knowledge of and engagement in Creative Writing studies and critical understanding and application of theories, research methodologies and techniques relevant to this field of study.

  13. Factor Analysis: Critical factors impacting practical problems from the discipline's perspective are identified.
  14. Theory Boundaries: Evaluation and definition of boundaries and limitations of theory recognizing the provisional nature of research findings.
  15. Problem Statement: Clear statement and contextualization of an identified problem for research purposes are delivered.
  16. Inquiry Mode: Description of an essential mode of inquiry relevant to the discipline in which the essay/project is developed.
  17. Research Procedures: All procedures (e.g., research strategies, data collection) are clearly described coherently and appropriately for the minor research project.
  18. Research Strategies: Appropriate research strategies (such as analysis, interpretation, evaluation) are clearly described coherently for the essay.
  19. Ethical Awareness: Reflection of awareness of ethical accountability and cultural sensitivity in all related aspects.
