The purpose of the Bachelor of Education degree is to provide a well-rounded education that empowers graduates with integrated knowledge to demonstrate applied competence, commitment, and responsibility as academically and professionally qualified beginner teachers. It aims to align with the institution's mission of becoming an excellent, internationally recognized research-intensive university while also focusing on developing a community of diverse individuals based on tolerance, openness, and reason.
The curriculum plays a vital role in shaping learners and guiding them towards exhibiting the desired attributes of graduates from the Faculty of Education. Key aims of the program include:
The Bachelor of Education program underwent re-design following the implementation of the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) in 2009 and the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications in 2011. The need to align with national directives and accreditation standards led to a review and re-curriculation of teacher education programs.
The essence of this re-curriculation was to move away from a sole focus on implementing the current curriculum towards educating professionals capable of interpreting, designing, and implementing curriculum effectively. The redesign aimed to address the complexities of education in South Africa and ensure that teacher education qualifications are conceptualized within a theoretical framework and curriculum perspective.
