Purpose and Rationale

The purpose of the qualification is to provide a graduate with the following:

  1. Wide range of highly specialised knowledge and skills
  2. Advanced knowledge and skills to enable research in occupational science, occupational therapy, and disability issues

The qualification enables the graduate to:

  • Register as an occupational therapist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa
  • Practice various roles as an occupational therapist in:
    • State institutions
    • Private health institutions
    • Educational institutions
    • Private practices
    • Companies or communities
    • Any setting where people are at risk or have occupational dysfunction

The skills learned can be utilized in:

  • Complex, variable, and highly specialised rehabilitation situations in South African:

    • Labour sectors of service delivery
  • Meeting international standards of occupational therapy

The qualification aims to enable the graduate to:

  • Plan, resource, and manage the occupational therapy process for clients (individuals, families, organizations, communities)
  • Educate clients about:
    • Activities for health
    • Prevention of impairment
  • Enable clients to become occupationally functional in all spheres of life

Additionally, the qualification is designed to enable the graduate to:

  • Plan, resource, and manage accessible, efficient, and cost-effective occupational therapy practice or service
  • Utilize a client-centered approach showing empathy and caring towards the client
  • Demonstrate accountability to the client or employer for achieving client Occupational Therapy (OT) practice/service, personal goals, and workload.

1. Problem-solving and Flexibility

  • Identify, assess, formulate, and solve complex concrete and abstract problems related to activities-health, occupational dysfunction, impairment, and disability.
  • Solve problems creatively and innovatively, especially within the context of health in South Africa.

2. Application of Knowledge

  • Apply knowledge of various subjects such as occupational science, therapy process, disability, medicine, sociology, etc.

3. Competence in Occupational Therapy

  • Keep systematic and accurate records related to occupational therapy.

  • Plan and conduct investigations relevant to occupational therapy.

4. Occupational Therapy Programme

  • Evaluate and modify therapy based on progress.
  • Develop new treatment methods.
  • Identify community health needs and plan health promotion programs.

5. Principles and Tools in Occupational Therapy
