Purpose and Rationale

Purpose

The first purpose of the qualification is to produce dental qualified learners who will be professionally equipped at nationally and internationally recognised standards to serve any community, specifically in South Africa, and to function independently in the community.

The second purpose of the qualification is to train dentists who will meet the requirements to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and will be able to specialise further in specific dental or health care management fields.

The third purpose of the qualification is to produce dental qualified learners who will have been trained appropriately to pursue a rewarding career in dentistry which provides continued personal intellectual growth.

Qualifying Learner Competencies in Dentistry

  1. Understanding and Knowledge:

    • Demonstrates understanding of human body structure, especially the mouth and jaws.
    • Recognizes common diseases and disorders of oral, dental, and maxillo-facial areas.
    • Interprets laboratory and radiographic investigations.
    • Formulates comprehensive treatment plans considering patient's general health.
    • Understands principles of health promotion and disease prevention in oral health.
    • Identifies environmental factors affecting oral health prevalence.
    • Acknowledges ethical, legal, political, and financial aspects impacting dentistry.
    • Understands research methodology and critically evaluates research publications.
  2. Clinical Competence:

    • Proficient in taking and analyzing medical and dental histories.
    • Conducts thorough physical examinations of oral and maxillo-facial regions.
    • Skilled in performing operative dental procedures with theoretical understanding.
    • Proficient in using dental instruments, equipment, drugs, and materials.
    • Applies appropriate methods for managing oral and dental diseases.
    • Recognizes and manages dental emergencies.
    • Applies dental skills to individual patients, families, or communities.
  3. Professionalism and Communication:

    • Exhibits qualities of initiative, reliability, and trustworthiness.
    • Communicates effectively with patients and colleagues.
    • Shows respect and non-prejudice towards all patients.
    • Respects patient confidentiality and informed consent.
    • Acknowledges the roles of other healthcare workers.
    • Recognizes ethical and moral responsibilities in patient care.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Occurs during clinical years through clinical assessments, practical exams, and written tests.
  • Learners are evaluated on cognitive and clinical reasoning skills, psychomotor skills, and patient-centered care.
  • Skills include problem-solving, formulating diagnoses, evidence-based practice, reflection on decisions, and application of knowledge in diverse contexts.
