Purpose and Rationale

Objectives of Majoring in Financial Management

  1. Academic Focus: Offering learners the option to major in Financial Management at undergraduate level to acquire knowledge and skills in business financing, dividends, and investment decisions.

  2. Financial Statement Analysis: Equipping learners with the ability to analyze and interpret financial statements for diverse business applications.

  3. Practical Problem-Solving: Empowering learners to apply acquired knowledge and skills to solve real-world financial management challenges in business settings.

  4. Responsibility and Ethics: Instilling a problem-solving mindset in learners while fostering a sense of responsibility towards the workplace and wider community.

By addressing these objectives, the Financial Management major aims to provide a comprehensive education that prepares learners for success in the field and encourages ethical leadership in their future roles.

Outcomes

  1. Ability to understand financial management concepts and techniques.
  2. Ability to apply skills learned in business financing and investment decisions and to communicate freely with the business community.
  3. Ability to analyse and interpret financial statements for different purposes. Specify critical cross-field outcomes:
  4. Identify, analyse, formulate and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made.
  5. Working effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation and community.
  6. Organising and managing oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively.
  7. Using science and technology effectively and critically showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.
  8. Communicating using visual aids, mathematical and language skills in the modes of oral and or written persuasion.
  9. Demonstrating understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation. Associated assessment outcomes:
  10. Solve problems by means of exploring, and critically evaluating abstract and personal situations.
  11. Solve problems by generating alternative strategies for dealing with those problems. Specific outcomes:
  12. Think contextually, and reflect on learning from individual experience and academic disciplines in relation to political, social, cultural, technological and economic realities, locally and globally.
  13. Think and do business or conduct oneself in public in a professional manner. Associated Assessment Outcomes:
  14. Relate learning from individual experience to knowledge encountered in an academic environment and vice versa.
  15. Relate learning from experience and academic contexts to different contexts using present and future scenarios.
  16. Relate learning from academic context to the expected professional and business ethics.

Assessment Criteria

Qualification is awarded on successful completion of all the prescribed modules to year 3. The following formative and summative continuous assessments apply:

  • Examinations: 30%
  • Assignment/class work: 20%
  • Group Project: 50%

Integrated assessment methods are incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved, including written examinations, oral examinations, group projects, and assignments.
