Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose:

The qualification is designed to provide learners with a broad-based curriculum to prepare them for various investment-related specialities. The curriculum has been revamped to meet international industry standards and focuses on Investment Management in South Africa and globally. The program aims to equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field by incorporating industry-relevant concepts from the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute. The primary goal is to prepare learners for postgraduate research and enhance their understanding of investment practices.

Qualification Rationale:

This qualification aims to equip qualifying learners with both intellectual competencies and practical skills in analyzing, interpreting, and applying basic and advanced investment principles across different financial markets. Learners will be able to critically evaluate their investment decisions and applications within the comprehensive context of investment management. Upon successful completion, learners will develop a global investment perspective and a deep understanding of the global marketplace, giving them a competitive edge in the job market.

Outcomes

  1. Identify and analyse short- and long-term factors that influence the objectives and constraints for both individual and institutional investors, in line with the client's capital market familiarity, life cycle and expectations.
  2. Analyse economic, political and social data and integrate the information into investment selection by incorporating short- and intermediate-term expected conditions in the investment management process.
  3. Analyse and value financial instruments traded in the equity, bond, money, foreign exchange, property, derivatives markets and collective investments, by applying quantitative and qualitative techniques, and manage financial exposure by applying appropriate strategies.
  4. Construct a portfolio in line with the investors objectives and constraints by integrating current and projected market conditions, asset valuation techniques and existing portfolio management theories, incorporating appropriate asset allocation and security selection strategies### determine and monitor portfolio performance by applying appropriate quantitative techniques and re-align portfolio composition with changes in investor objectives and constraints and/or changes in market conditions.
  5. Conduct empirical research in the broader field of Investment Management.
