Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching

Education, Training and Development - Schooling

Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching is a Qualification at NQF Level 7 that prepares teachers to educate learners from Grades 4 to 7. The purpose of this qualification is to provide professionally qualified novice teachers for the intermediate phase. It accomplishes this by supplying student teachers with a comprehensive education that gives them the necessary subject content knowledge, teaching skills, a solid understanding of the interconnected nature of education theory and practice, and an awareness of the teaching profession's context in South Africa.

Rationale:

The development of this qualification by the Faculty of Education is a response to the current national teacher shortage in South Africa. The 2010 survey on Teacher Education in South Africa conducted by the Department of Higher Education and Training highlighted that the country is not producing an adequate number of new teachers to meet the system's requirements. The survey emphasized the necessity to double teacher production in South Africa. Additionally, there is a significant demand for teachers to be trained in the Intermediate Phase, particularly in subjects such as Economics and Management Sciences, Arts and Culture, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Technology, and African languages.
